Summary: Shinra keeps a closer eye on things than some people realize.
A/N: I hate my brain. It's a slutty whore with plotbunnies.
First Moves
When people start with new technology, there are always unexpected side effects. Things not expected, reactions that were not part of the original speculations.
Especially in the children.
So, when Shinra put in the Mako reactors, they did not just send in technicians and managers and teachers to train new workers for their reactor, they sent in doctors as well. The doctors were open to the public, and were well trained in a wide range of skills, not just for dealing with the inevitable Mako related injuries of the workers in the reactors. They kept careful track of the general health of the people and sent the results back to Midgar, to the main labs, if anything unusual popped up at all.
Their main focus was the results the Mako refinement and storage would leave on the local children. So when people brought their kids in for injuries or sickness or checkups, the doctors were always sure to do a few extra tests. Checking things like Mako levels, oddities on the genetic level, general scans to make sure things weren’t too far out of the normal ranges.
Then, ten years after the second reactor activation, something did. A normal one month checkup turned up something…very odd. So odd that the doctor, Jacobs, immediately called and was actually connected to the head of the project. After a bit of discussion, the order was given, and the man hung up.
Jacobs did have a bit of a moral twinge about doing this to a child, but…it had already been done, hadn’t it? The child was already damaged in a way by the reactor being here, might as well see if something good might not come from it. So, filing the twinge away, he called the mother up and told her that something odd had popped up in the tests, and if she wouldn’t be able to bring her child back for more testing. Sounding worried, she agreed and they set up the appointment.
It didn’t matter that he had been the doctor here for the last ten years, and that these people trusted him. That he had been here and treating people like the poor woman he had most likely just frightened the wits out of since most of them were in their teens, if not younger. He was a Shinra employee, and he was doing his job.
When Lena brought her son back for a checkup, he had one of the nurses take her out to get a cup of tea to settle her nerves while he looked the child over.
He was a healthy specimen, bubbly and chubby and bright eyed. Too bright eyed. And he was going to be even more so when Jacobs took the syringe and tapped it. The green fluid inside glowed dimly, and he sighed. “Sorry,” he said softly, then slid the needle in and injected it.
The child began to wail, and he saw the green lines traveling up the fat arm for a few moments before fading. The boy continued to wail, flailing his arm around wildly as if it burned.
Another needle, and this time he filled it with blood. When Lena almost ran into the room, he was setting about soothing the baby. “I didn’t mean to frighten you,” he said smoothly, bouncing the still upset child. “I drew a bit of blood, and you know how he is about needles.”
Still wide eyed, but calming, she took her son back. “I know. Do you think he’ll be okay? What do you think is wrong with him?”
The look on his face was…very neutral, and he did his best to convince her it wasn’t anything bad, but still convince her it was serious.
He sent them on their way, and sent the blood to the main labs.
He wasn’t surprised when, a month later, the town was up in arms over a kidnapping. He knew they would never find out who did it, and he went along with his everyday life, pushing the boy out of his mind.
He would never be able to save him, anyway.
///
Sephiroth didn’t like it here. It was all cold and icky and he didn’t know any of the doctors except his father, and the only nice person he knew wasn’t there at all.
Outside had been neat at first, all the greens and the animals and the smells, but now he was in the labs again and they were both familiar and different. The sharp, sterile smell was still the same, but the chemicals were different and, even though it was there, the smell of the Mako was different. Not to mention that there were more subjects here, and that was a whole different set of smells. The only specimen he had ever met besides himself had been Vincent, and Vincent wasn’t here with him.
Father said they were in Midgar, though he didn’t know what that meant. Just that it was a different lab. He had been asleep when they had gotten here, and had missed the landing and everything.
Sephiroth hoped he got to fly like that again one day. He doubted it would happen, though. Father hadn’t been happy when they had to move.
The worst part about this place was it was boring. When he was in the place before, between tests and practice and reading and the other things he had to do, he could spend a little time talking to Vincent. That had been nice. But he couldn’t do that here. He didn’t know anyone here.
“Sephiroth, your father is looking for you.”
Just nodding silently at the scientist, who he still didn’t know, he padded off in the direction he knew his father’s office to be. Professor Hojo was a busy man, so when he passed on the message to come see him, Sephiroth listened. One reason was because the man got mad if his time was wasted over something like Sephiroth dawdling. And, if he didn’t go when called, Sephiroth knew he’d never get to see his father.
So he slipped into the lab office after a soft knock and looked at the man silently. For a minute, Hojo ignored him, and Sephiroth took the moment trying to figure out what the man held. It looked like a wad of cloth, but why…?
“Sephiroth, come here. I have a present for you.”
A…present?
What was a present?
Moving closer, Sephiroth was surprised to have the cloth handed to him. “I want you to help Dr. Mirana to take care of him. His name is Zack and he is three months old. He’s yours, and I expect you to start training him as soon as he’s able to.”
And with that, Hojo shooed Sephiroth out of the office. Finding a quiet corner, arms full of cloth, Sephiroth finally poked at it to look. The sound it made surprised him, and, after almost dropping the bundle, he pulled and pushed at cloth till it parted enough for him to go wide eyed.
A tiny little person was looking at him, with big purple eyes.
Father had given him a person. A little-bitty person.
He would have to take very good care of it, so maybe Father would give him more presents.
“Hello, Zack,” he said softly, fingers petting gently at the soft hair. “My name is Sephiroth. You’re my Zack, and I’m going to do everything I can to make you happy.”
His present-person.
His Zack.

Is this gonna be just a Sephiroth and Zack thing or will Cloud eventually be thrown in as well?

And of course Zack would just sit back and laugh his ass off until he realizes they're imaging him in a corset. *grin*

First case turned up in Gongaga, whee? *pets Zack*
Look, Seph's got a Zack-pet.
And the bunnies are evil.

...Wait. Is Cloud gonna be a present person too?
(Dear god, just seeing "present people" in print makes me grin like a loon.)

You'll see about the others. *evil smirk*

On other things though... present-person! XD
How old is Seph suposed to be? I once worked out he's 9 years older than Cloud, so if Zack is only 2 years older than Cloud he'd be 6? Ahh well, he at least has an adult who will be taking care of Zack as well - until Zack's old enough to understand orders I supose.
Which, thinking about ages... Aeris and Ifalna aught to arrive soon, shouldn't they? There's something cute about Ifalna acting like a kind-of surogate mother figure for Seph.

Seph has just turned seven. Aeris will show up in about a year. As for the rest...you'll see.

...Plot bunnies may mob you, but that is their purpose. They're bunnies- they reproduce like crazy and make all other actions impossible by the sheer fuzzy overwhelmingness of them. And you write their mad inspirations wonderfully.
Took me forever to figure out the 'present-person' was Zack- didn't realize it until the end. I read too many Cloud/Sephiroth fics...
Please update soon!

Nope, that is an entirely different bunny. Don't ask me where this story came from, but it just emerged, fully formed, into my brain.
I am glad you like it, and hope you enjoy the others in this series and my other fics.
