The world keeps on moving.

That was a fact, and not one that Zack had ever forgotten. But it was still hard to realize that, sitting in the mountains that surrounded Nibelheim, Cloud a heavy weight against his side.

Neither of them were healthy, though he was a lot better off than Cloud by a long shot. He was conscious, though he wasn't sure how much of that was due to Angeal and his rather rough method of waking Zack up. Those words still hurt, though he couldn't imagine Angeal really meaning them.

He had no idea of how long they had been in the labs. Mako poisoning didn't happen fast, and he was rather fuzzy on what just had been done to both of them, but Zack knew he was faster than before. Stronger, as well. Armor didn't used to bend quite so easily last time he sparred with a group of SOLDIERs, and he knew some of those people he had fought down there were dead. Bones weren't made to crack that way. He was still sensitive enough from the mako to -feel- the bones splinter.

They had been in there a while, though, he knew that. Not just from Cloud's sickness, either. The town had been rebuilt. He remembered it before, the wash of heat on his skin as the houses had collapsed into sparking flames.

Zack wished he understood, really understood, why Sephiroth had done it. Why he hadn't just left, like Angeal, like Genesis. Though he was sure Genesis had something to do with it. The bastard.

He still didn't like that man.

Wrapping an arm around Cloud's shoulders, he felt the lax muscles tense faintly, then relax yet again. His friend was in there somewhere, and Zack was just going to have to watch out for him until Cloud found his way out of poisoning. It was possible, because he had heard of people doing it before. They just had to be stubborn, and Cloud was as stubborn a guy as he had ever met. So Zack was going to have faith, and he was going to have to keep them moving.

Right now, they had a bit of breathing room, though he should keep them moving. But it was hard to process things right at the moment. Flickers of movements and shapes kept popping up in the corners of his eyes, bright green and flickering like willow wisps in the mucky areas back home. Nothing solid, but enough to catch his attention when his adrenaline levels surged. Not a good thing, not when he was having to be a little sneaky at the moment.

Sadly, sneaky wasn't something he did well, but he was going to have to learn quick. Especially when reinforcements came in. They weren't going to let him and Cloud walk away, he knew that. They hadn't let Angeal and Genesis, and those two hadn't walked away with such a nasty secret. If the news that Sephiroth had burned Nibelheim to the ground got out..... It would be bad.

Zack could just guess what would happen, and it just started out with rebellions. There would be another war, and he didn't think Shin-Ra was all that minded to go to war again. The first one had been expensive enough, and if Wutai tossed out their Shin-Ra guards, it would get nasty. Because if they did, every other group that had a bone to pick with the company would start up.

A lot of people would get hurt, a lot of people would die. Not that that would matter to Shin-Ra. No, they would be losing a lot of money out of their pockets as reactors and production lines were targeted and attacked.

All it would take was the news that their best fighter, the focus of their PR campaign during and after the Wutai war, had gone insane. People had based fights off of less.

Zack and Cloud were just insignificant details in the face of that. Not to mention he was sure that Shin-Ra didn't want it to get out that they were experimenting on people. There was enough uneasy talk with the SOLDIER program, and that was just enhancements. If they realized that anyone, from unborn babies to full grown adults, could be taken in to be tested on.....

It wouldn't just be small groups fighting. There would be people sure that their missing loved ones had vanished into labs, and would be determined to get them back. Groups like Avalanche would find their ranks swelling, and there would be terrorist activities all over.

So he knew that Shin-Ra wouldn't just let them go.

The world might keep on moving, but some things would never change.

Pulling Cloud's arm over his shoulder, Zack pushed himself to his feet, dragging Cloud with him.

"Come on, Spike. Let's get some more ground covered before we crash for the night."

It might not be much ground, but Zack had never given up before, and he didn't plan to give up now. Shin-Ra wanted to take them out? He wasn't going to let them without one hell of a fight.

*pat pats*

I have to admit what really appeals to me about this one is how you show that Zack isn't' okay either coming out of all that. So often Zack seems to be okay or practically okay and Cloud is the one who is totally out of it. It is nice seeing that Zack isn't' all there either :D

*purrs* Is it wrong to want to see that sort of world, where that information did get out somehow? And Zack got to find Sephiroth, kick some sense into his head before dragging him back to Cloud and Aeris?
