Wake Up
This isn't real.
It's an illusion, and hallucination. It's something he's dreaming, a nightmare.
But he can feel the blood on his skin as he touched the man laying next to him.
He could smell it, thick and clinging to the inside of his nose. Why does it smell so strong?
"Zack?"
His voice was raspy, and his throat hurt as he spoke the words. Absently, he nudged the man's shoulder. He should be waking up. Zack should be waking up. One of them should. Because this wasn't real. It wasn't allowed to be real.
Ignoring the cooling skin, he shook Zack's shoulder, croaking his name again. "Wake up." Zack was a lazy thing, but he always woke up when Cloud tried hard enough.
Always.
"Come on, Zack."
Why wasn't he waking up? Why wasn't Cloud? He didn't like this dream. It was even worse than the other dreams, the whispers and the hurt and fear. He didn't like those dreams, but he wanted those dreams over this one. This one hurt.
"Zack, -please-, wake up."
Zack wasn't waking up.
Curling up next to the man, Cloud rested his head on Zack's chest, willing it to move, wanting to hear the thump of Zack's heart. It was a familiar sound. A comforting one. He had been hearing it for a long, long time now. Every time they were still, he'd heard it, felt a hug. It was familiar, comforting.
He couldn't hear it. Wrong, wrong, wrongwrongwrong!
Zack was fine. Had to be fine. Zack was Zack, and it was as simple as that. Zack wouldn't let anything get him down. It was impossible. So that meant Zack must have just been really tired.
"Okay, we can nap here."
Ignoring the cold that seemed all around him, Cloud cuddled up closer to Zack. The skin under him slowly warmed, and that was good.
Now he just needed Zack to wake up.

Yes, Cloud, take a nap. When you wake up, he will instead.
