She is there by his side. She had been there by his side for a long time now.
Second only to Hughes, she is the one he turns to, the one that he trusts to be there to help him through things. Hughes is his best friend, but she is the one who has claimed the next spot in his heart.

“Sir, it’s almost nine.”
Looking up, Roy realized just how late it had gotten. Stupid paperwork. He had been here all day, reading and signing off on paper after paper. He had walked in the door, and found himself almost buried under a pile of paperwork. He had worked through lunch, eating something at his desk, and now his stomach was more than willing to remind him that he had just missed dinner as well. Remind him in a very loud manner.
Grimacing, he patted his stomach, trying to figure out what might still be open at this time of night so that he might be able to get something to eat without having to cook it himself. While he was perfectly able to feed himself, unlike what some of his people thought, he just didn’t want to do so while he was feeling tired after such a long day.
“Here.”
Blinking, Roy focused on the basket that Riza had just sat on his desk. Something that smelled really, really good drifted out of it, and he slowly moved to pull the top off of it. Inside was a variety of dishes, several of which were his favorites. How on earth...?
Looking up, he realized. It was Riza. He should have expected this from her. She took her job seriously, and part of that, though only implied, never stated, was to make sure he stayed fit.
Though Roy knew that it was more than that.
He really was reminded of Hughes.
And he knew that she had been there as long as he had, if not longer, though she had taken the time to get him food. He wondered if she had gotten food for herself.
Looking in the basket again, he grinned. “Grab a chair,” he said. “There’s enough here to share, and I’m sure that you haven’t taken the time to eat, either.”
Her small smile back told him that this was the right move, and he relaxed. Riza could take care of herself, a fact that he was very much aware of. But, sometimes, it made him feel better when she let him help take care of her. After all, she did it enough times for him that turnabout was only fair.
Roy enjoyed taking care of his people, and some, like Hughes, like Riza, meant a great deal to him. More than he could ever say, and more than he would ever admit. They knew it, though, just as he knew how they felt. It was an interesting little game, and one he enjoyed playing, though Hughes used a completely different set of rules than Riza did.
And Riza, Roy was more than willing to admit, though never to her face, was far more attractive to be playing the game with. He’d never act on it until she showed interest, though, because he would never let it ruin their friendship.
She helped keep him going, after all.
///
She knew that he cared for her, and she felt the same. He was the first and foremost in her heart, and she would do anything to help him. Help him reach his goals, help him stay healthy. Help him stay sane.
Sometimes, she decided, that was the hardest one of the set. Because some things weren’t meant to be easy to keep one’s sanity through.
///
She watched him blame rain on a cloudless sky and stood by him. It was all she could do.
He hurt, and it hurt her to see him like this. This wasn’t something that could be fixed, no matter how much and how desperately she wanted to. It hurt to see him like this, in pain and unwilling to share it. Unwilling or unable. She knew that they were being watched. As was anyone who had been close to the man. Hughes had been murdered, and she wondered over what.
Still, that wasn’t her concern at the moment. Her concern was Roy, who was standing there, stubborn as anything, even as the rest of the mourners moved away. Hughes had been his friend, his best friend, and she knew that he would stand there till he felt he could actually walk away without embarrassing himself. So she would stand here with him and be his support when he needed her the most.
There they stayed, for longer than they should have, but she didn’t have the heart to encourage him to move. When he was ready, he did, and she went with him.
She had driven him today, not Havoc, because she knew that he would need company afterwards, and while Havoc would listen if Roy ordered him away, she would not. Because she knew better than to leave him alone. Hughes had let her know enough, without breaking Roy’s confidence, to tell her that her friend shouldn’t be alone.
So she took him home. There, she made sure he had something in his stomach before he found a bottle, and she stayed near him to keep him from breaking things. He was upset, she knew it. She was upset as well. Hughes had been a friend, but he had been so much more to Roy. He had been family.
Now he was gone, and she took up his task like she knew he would have wanted her to.
The kiss wasn’t unexpected. They had been together before, when things reached breaking points, but this one was different. It was hungry, yes, but so very lost. She had kissed back, and things had gone as she had expected them to. It was rougher than normal, but she did not turn him loose, and he clung to her tight afterwards.
Riza held him, and pretended she did not feel him shake. She let him press his face between her breasts, and pretended she did not feel the tears that he shed.
She was there for him. They kept each other going, and this was just one more way that they did it.
