Aftermath
“You have got to be kidding me.”
Zack grinned at Cloud, the latter of which was starting at him in complete disbelief. “Zack, we -just- beat Sephiroth a month ago, the world is in total chaos at the moment due to the destruction left behind by Meteor, and we got you and Aeris back through sheer luck. And now you want to go roaming halfway around the world? Why?”
The older man, who was sprawled out on a couch, Aeris curled up against one side, Cloud the other, ran his hand through his hair. “Spike, two things. One, well, you two are the ones who said you guys found the house where Aeris was born. We should go check that out.” Aeris smiled at that, hugging Zack tight, and Cloud could just feel his resistance melting. A glance at Tifa told him she was melting as well.
“And the second?” he asked finally, head tilting to give Zack a look of “this better be good.”
“I’ve still got a few contacts left, and, well, they’ve been hearing rumors of a black caped man.”
The other three went very still at those words. The same words often used to describe Sephiroth as they had chased him around the world. It couldn’t be. He was dead, right? Cloud had helped kill him again, even the part that had tried to escape into his head.
That stunned look, though, when that had happened. Like Sephiroth had been waking from a bad dream....
“Where?” Simple as that, and Cloud focused intently on Zack. He wanted to know what that look was for. If it was just shock over losing, or something else.
“North. Near the crater. Seems to be his main haunt. I know a few reports coming in had him in that area.”
Tifa was blinking at him, still slowly getting used to this whole situation. She had been stunned to have Aeris back, and she had quietly admitted to Cloud a day or so after having both Zack and Aeris dumped on them that she may have had something that may have been a crush on Zack from way back when. Given that Aeris had gleefully pounced Tifa with hugs, and Zack had done the same with Cloud, it wasn’t any surprise at all that Cloud had realized that there were more than a few things he had forgotten from before.
It had been a hard thing, really. He and Tifa had shared something special the night before heading to face off against Sephiroth, and now he was remembering details about his time with Zack from before. Aeris’s smirking over “her boyfriend’s boyfriend” and commentary of if she got to watch them finally didn’t help any either. How could she hide such perverted thoughts behind such innocent eyes? That’s all Cloud wanted to know.
Tifa hadn’t been sure how to interact with Aeris at first. Or Zack, for that matter. Especially after she had found out about the past relationship that Cloud and Zack had shared. Zack had taken her off to the side, and Cloud still wasn’t sure what they had talked about, but it seemed to help Tifa relax a lot. Which was good. Relaxed was much better than the hesitant unsureness that had caused a hard time connecting with Tifa at all. Unsure was never one of her qualities. Not really.
Anyway, now she was curled up on the side of Cloud that wasn’t being occupied by Zack, and he had to admit...it was nice.
Right now, however, though he really did want to enjoy it, it wasn’t exactly a good time. Now with news that Sephiroth might be active. Again. Already.
“This sucks,” he muttered, closing his eyes and letting his head fall back against the couch.
“Oh, it might be fun,” Aeris grinned. “We can always dress you up again.”
“No,” he said firmly. “No way are you getting me into another dress in any way, shape, or form.”
The way Zack perked up reminded Cloud that the dark haired man hadn’t heard the story yet. He decided to cut off story time before it started. “Later, Zack. I’m sure Aeris and Tifa will be delighted to fill you in on all the wonderful details. But later. First of all, do you trust your sources?”
A nod. “They’re good people, and they aren’t too trusting of Shinra. Know them through my parents. Who we need to go visit sometime soon, and let them know I’m still alive.”
“Don’t think they know you are dead yet. Not officially,” Cloud told him. “I know we ran into them while we were traveling and they asked if we had known you.”
Tifa sighed and grabbed a sheet of paper. “All right,” she said, after snagging a pen as well. “This is going to be our official To Do list.”
First thing she wrote, in big letters, was “Confirm Sephiroth’s Death.”
Next on the list was “Visit Zack’s Parents.” She nodded, then looked at Zack. “This is an important one. Family is important.”
“Then we need to see my mom,” Aeris added in. “I know Cait said he told her I was alive again, but we should go visit her as well. And then we should look for a house. With a big yard.”
“And a place for me to set up 7th Heaven again,” Tifa added, writing down those things. It made Cloud smile, seeing her so effortlessly accept that the four of them were going to live in one big place. He wanted them together, and if they wanted it as well, it made everything that much better. Zack’s hand on his shoulder tightened a moment, and Cloud smiled more.
“Better make sure we have someplace to spar,” Zack said, tossing out his two cents. “Given who we are, a -big- area to spar in. Tough, too.”
As Tifa started writing that down, Cloud grabbed his own sheet of paper and started to list supplies. It sounded like they were going to be going on one hell of a trip, so they might as well be ready to stock up. Kalm didn’t have a lot in way of supplies, but they could get the basics, and head towards the farm. Pick up some birds, and he knew just the ones to grab as well. If they were going on a trip and adventure that was this serious, well, they were going to need the best.
“Zack, Aeris,” he said calmly. “Tell me, you guys ever seen a gold chocobo?”
