Useful Lies

He had been blind.

All of them had been using him. Shinra, Hojo, the military.

Zack.

All of them, just leeching off of him and using him up. As if he was their play toy, something they controlled.

She wasn’t like that.

He could hear her voice, promising that she just wanted him for him, that she didn’t care that he wasn’t human. She was his mother, and she wasn’t human either. So it was only right that they were together, against all the contamination of this world.

He was the most furious with Zack. How could Zack do this to him? All that talk about friendship and caring and he had been lying the entire time.

Well, something would have to be done about that.

He knew how Zack pretended to be. Caring, devoted and protective of everyone.

Still, it…had felt good to have the man pretend to be like that over him.

So he would give him a distraction. A warning.

The destruction of the town should do it. Punish those who would hurt Mother, and give Zack something else to do.

He didn’t want to kill Zack. But he would.

The man was only human, after all.

Confusion

This was the hardest thing he had ever had to do.

As he ran up the mountain, moving as fast as his legs could carry him, he was trying to make everything fit in his head. He knew Seph had been acting weird, but….

He never would have expected this.

Spike was in the town, helping the survivors.

There shouldn’t have had to be survivors. It never should have happened.

But it had.

Why?

What had made Seph do this? It…. There had been a lot of bad things in Wutai, but he had never seen anything that would say his friend was capable of this. There had been others who had, but not Seph. Never Seph.

Pausing his thoughts to focus leaping the fallen tree, Zack pushed himself harder.

The reactor.

The reactor and the mansion.

He was going to kill Hojo if the man had any clue that this was going to happen. After he found out what had caused it and how to get Seph back to normal. Cause there had to be something making the man do this.

Damnit, Seph, why?

He didn’t want to have to hurt his best friend.

Somehow, he would fix this.

Wow. These are so SAD! I'm so glad you decided to write something about these two. Their friendship pre-Nibelheim really intrigues me. And showing Sephiroth's insanity and his feelings of betrayal, and Zack's determination to still save him.... Wow.... **sniffle.**

You can't call Zack anything other than stubborn, and I think Seph was just waiting for the betrayal, that's why he expected it so easily. *gives them both cookies*

Poor thing. No wonder everyone likes to rewrite the game.

**nods.** Maybe Seph had been betrayed before, and found it hard to trust Zack in the first place, but Zack stubbornly wormed his way in. I'll have to write something pre-Nibelheim about them sometime. ^^

Right now, instead of rewriting the game, I'm instead trying to repair the damage caused by Seph's insanity in it. Well, of course, some things could never be fixed, but I wanted to give him another chance. ^^ So he's sane again in the fic I've been posting.
