Over His Head
Some days, Zack decided, it really wasn’t worth getting out of bed.
He also decided that he was really, really tired of dealing with insane mages. He was starting to wonder if there were any sane mages, actually. Even Seph had a little bit of odd at times that made Zack wonder. But the man hadn’t set him on fire yet, so he was willing to go along with the odd. Not like he was so normal, either.
But this mage wasn’t sleeping with him, and had tried to set him on fire, and only a twist and frantic shove to the side had keep him in possession of his hair and the proud not-owner of scars.
Problem was, at the moment, he was his lone target. That flying thing with waaaaay too many heads had Chaos and Vincent well distracted, and Cloud was still shaking his head from triggering a mage trap, which had resulted in a very loud boom. One day, Zack was going to find out why Cloud was so damn inept when it came to magic, but right now he was a bit distracted. Clueless on where Seph was at the moment, but it wasn’t here.
“You’re in over your head, little boy,” the man sneered, lashing fire out at Zack again. Yelping, Zack cast what little protective magic Seph had been able to beat into his head, deflecting the fire and scrambling to his feet as he did. Panting, he really, really could use some help right now.
The man snarled at him, showing far more, and far pointer, teeth than any regular human had. “If you want to play it that way, fine. I don’t have time to deal with something as worthless as you are, anyway.”
Another gesture. This time there was no fire, though. Instead, the ground under Zack’s feet vanished, turning into water so fast he didn’t have time to react, instead dropping into the pool. Clamping his mouth shut, he started to head for the surface, only to stop when something twisted around a leg, pain flaring up as teeth sank into his thigh.
Hand already going for the dagger he carried, Zack looked to see some type of…snake…plant thing latched onto his leg, blood staining the water. Slashing at it, he gritted his teeth and looked up at the shimmering circle of light that mean air.
Anytime one of the others wanted to help, he was more than happy for them to do so. Because it was already starting to burn in his chest for want of air. Too much time fighting already. Really could use the help.
Things started to go grey way too fast, and biology kicked in and he was forced to gasp, only to suck in water. Thing started going away a lot faster, but he still trusted one of the others to show up at the last second.
Come on guys, he thought fuzzily as grey sank into black, time for a last second bit of heroics….
///
“I’m going to kill him,” Sephiroth said, panting a bit, water dripping from his bangs as he rolled Zack onto his side as the man gagged up water. “Stupid…idiotic…how could he….” He continued to mutter, shivering a little now that he was out of the water and in the cooler air.
“He’s going to be okay,” Cloud said, head still tilted oddly. Sephiroth was sure that the blast had damaged his inner ear and thrown off his balance, but that wasn’t as important as it was to make sure Zack kept breathing. The twins were finishing off the summons with a vengeance, and Sephiroth focused on making sure Zack didn’t choke as he vomited up water.
That had been close. Far, far too close. The only reason he had found Zack was because of the sudden bubbling of the water in the still circle of water.
“I’m going to put a collar on the man,” he said finally, absently petting wet, black hair. “Going to put a collar with a tracking device and a little thing to zap him when he does something stupid.”
It sounded like a plan. A really, really good plan.

(I can just see Zack's drenched puppy-eyes explanation of 'hey it wasn't MY fault he decided I looked like tasty barbecue! (sniffle) (achoo)' ending up with a combination good-shouting-at and good-snuggling all at once...)

You know, now I'm curious as to why Cloud sucks at magic too. You'd think, after all this time, he'd have a better handle on it...

It seems to be a Shinra trait, though, so....

I figured he could activate items/materia, like any non-mage does, but anything past a simple cantrip goes fizzle, cause he just can't swap out the power necessary. (Well, that's my theory anyways...)

But I know Rufus has the same bad luck with magic. So I'm pretty sure it's a Shinra/Strife thing. *pokes at her muses to stop giving half-bits of information*
