A/N: While
kemis was playing distractor with shiny fanart, I came across an picture of Sephiroth and Zack. Seph was in his normal gear, but, in the other frame, Zack was all ninja'd up. And, as is the nature of my brain, I got most of a universe, with just a few details needing to be ironed out. They were ironed, and now we have Ninja Zack aka TWE fic.
Also, I've completely fucked the timeline right here. Event that happens here I'm told happened in 1994 in the game. Well, it happened in the mid seventies here. *nods* Hope you enjoy it. Again, thanks to
forgottenlover for the arc title.
Leaving
Sighing, he watched the machines. It had been a long night, and he was ready to head home. But that didn’t look like that was going to be the case for at least another few hours. Some type of irregular readings had started to pop up, and though the engineers had gotten everything stabilized again, everyone was still on a high alert, and would be so until midday at least.
So much for breakfast with his family.
Mm, that sounded rather tasty, actually. Seemed like forever since he had woken up and eaten dinner with his wife and child, thought it had been far too rushed due to his oversleeping. Could always guarantee that whatever they had would always be a little different. Since she was from Wutai, and liked to cook when she could, he had gotten used to strange spices and odd combinations. Good, but odd.
He wanted to go home so he could find out how the hospital appointment had turned out. He hadn’t been able to ask last night, due to the same oversleeping that had caused him to hurry through supper. Their new baby had been born with a glow to his eyes, and they had been told to wait by their doctor to wait a few months before having the child tested. A few other reactor workers had had children born with the same eyes, but the glow had faded after a few weeks. It was apparently a side effect of living near and working at a Mako reactor. Rather like a mild case of Mako poisoning, which almost everyone in town had it.
After few days, he had wondered if it wasn’t more than just a simple case of poisoning. The baby was following him with clear eyes, already focusing easily on whoever would pick him up, and even on things past him. At two weeks, even when he was walking as quietly as he could, he found the baby would always be staring at the direction he was coming from. More than a few times, when he had been there, and his wife had come in; their son had looked up and began to babble happily before even he had heard her footsteps.
That…wasn’t expected. But his wife wasn’t so worried. She had just smiled and said that their child was well blessed and was content with that. Still, when he asked, she had agreed to take him, though she did not trust the Shinra doctors. All the reactors, when built, brought a host of personal. People to train local workers, managers, support staff, and doctors trained to deal with Mako induced accidents and other things.
Though, he did have to agree with his wife about the unease she felt over the doctor. While he was worried about his son, when the doctor started to drop by after he let it be known that the boy still had glowing eyes at six months, he had been suggesting heavily that he be brought in for a visit. The doctor had kept doing it until he had finally agreed.
There was a small niggle of fear that something was wrong with his child. Somewhere around the fourth month, the boy had started making small noises when touched. Not the happy babble he usually made, but almost pained sounds. Nothing bad, just if one touched him to much along the spine, it drew out the noise. That was when they had first talked about going to the doctor, but then the reaction had faded, and he thought it was just a passing fever.
It had come back last week. That was when they had made the appointment.
His thoughts about his child were disrupted as the sensors began to ping. Something was going on. Scanning them, he sucked in his breath. Oh, gods…..
Hearing the shouts of the other technicians, he knew that he wasn’t the only one whose equipment was showing a spiraling upheaval inside the reactor. Mako was literally boiling up inside, and alarms began to sound as it rose even higher.
Then, cutting through the sounds of the alarm, came the whoosh of the doors shutting and sealing.
They were trapped.
The Mako reactor was going to blow. He could hear the screams of those who were caught near the reserve as the Mako exploded outwards. It came up with a scream. A scream, as if all the voices in the world were bound up in a scream of anger and pain and forced through this tiny hole in the earth to express that hurt.
What had caused this?
His last thoughts were that he hoped the explosion was contained. And that his wife and child stayed safe.
Then the world erupted into pale green light, and he wasn’t worried about anything anymore.
///
She knew something was going to happen even as the lights went dark, and the sky went bright.
The day had been dull, overcast, and she had been walking around with a bad feeling since she had woke. It had not gotten better when her husband had called to say that he had to stay late.
She wanted to tell him about the doctor, who had looked at their child with eyes that frightened her, and injected him with something. She did not know what, only that her child had a needle mark on his chubby little arm, and the glow in his eyes was brighter than before.
The doctor had said he needed to call in a specialist. She did not like that. She did not trust these Shinra people, but it was good money, and her husband was good at what he did.
Her people did not like Shinra, and she knew the Shinra people here, for the most part, looked down upon her and her half-blood son.
Not the doctor, though. He looked at her child like he wanted to own him.
So she had waited, and though she could not tell her husband last night, she would this morning when he returned, most likely with rain, if the clouds broke as if they promised.
Then there had been a sound, a far off noise, a thin, high whine. She had not been able to tell what it was; only that it made her stomach clench and her teeth ache.
Then the sky lit up in a green glow, and all the lights in the town went out. Alarms began to sound, but she knew what had happened before they had even begun to wail.
In his crib, her child screamed, and then began to echo the wail with his own voice. Green tainted tears streamed from his eyes as she scooped him up.
Then the earth shook and a roar filled the air. Bolting, she dove for the nearest doorway as the glass in the window shattered inwards with the force of the blast.
The reactor had gone up.
That was something they trained them to deal with in all the meetings, but…nobody had ever expected it to happen. Reactors were supposed to be safe. Supposed to be clean and secure and provide energy with little cost.
It cost her a husband. She knew that. There would be no telling him to be wary of Shinra’s doctor today. There would be no showing him the mark on their son’s arm. There would be no watching her husband comfort their child.
Outside the world was still shaking from the explosion, and the sky turned black, though the horizon continued to glow green.
The rain poured down.
She would not stay. Not in this place she was not wanted, and not near anything that had to do with Shinra.
Collecting her son, and the supplies she would need, she waited. There were things she wanted to take, but she would not. She would take what she needed for her son, then she would return home.
Waiting just long enough for the rain that fell to stop being green, she slipped out to the stables and saddled up her chocobo, and loading up the other with the supplies. The entire time, the baby whimpered a bit, but stayed mostly quiet as he rode in the sling that held him against her body.
“~Come, my son. We will return to my family. You will like Wutai very much, I believe.~” She spoke in her native language, the language her son would learn.
In the stable doorway, she looked once more to the only light in the dark sky.
“~We will always remember that Shinra is what stole your father, my child. I will not let Shinra take you as they took your father. Come, we leave this place behind us, and shall go to where Shinra can not touch us. Where we will be safe from their hands.
We will leave Gongaga now Zachary, but I will tell you of it one day, when you are grown.~”
Then, making sure her child was covered, hiding his dark hair and glowing violet eyes from the dark, green tinged sky, she rode out.
This place held nothing for her now.
