“Hey, Jim, catch.”
Jim Hawkings barely had time to react before a greenish thing came flying at him. It hit his palm with a surprisingly loud thunk. After checking to make sure no more of the unusual items were heading his way, Jim looked down at it.
It was green, and was larger on the bottom than on top. It was shaped odd, like people that were called pear-shaped. Kinda lumpy, actually. “What is this, Gene?”
The red haired man was grinning as he tossed more of the strange shaped things to the others of the crew. “It’s a pear. Our last client finally managed to develop a strain that would grow in this planets soil.” A pause as Gene sank his teeth in his pear. Two or three chews, and he was talking again, mindless of the fact that he still had a mouth full of food. “They grow them on a few worlds, but something about most planets makes them turn out strange. Nobody knows why, but they just don’t grow like apples do.”
Eyeing the fruit warily, Jim watched as Gene happily took another bite. Seeing that his friend hadn’t fallen over dead yet, Jim decided to risk it. He bit into the fruit, teeth tearing through the almost waxy skin and sinking into the pale flesh behind. An almost sweet taste flooded his mouth as his chewed on the bit in his mouth.
“So, what’s the occasion? You don’t share like this.” Aisha was blunt as she worked her way through her own fruit.
Gene shrugged. “My dad said this time of year was special. That in the old realms, almost every culture had festivals and celebrations during the winter months. Giftgiving was common. Since we’re broke, you guys get fruit.” He shrugged, completely ignoring the stares he was receiving from the others. Who knew Gene had any strange bits of knowledge like that?
Jim was the first to break the silence. “We’re broke because you spend all our money on stupid things, Gene. I barely have enough to keep the ship repaired.”
And, with the sweet taste of new in their mouths, the crew of the Outlaw Star returned to the everyday.
