Okay, I know that I still owe people Christmas drabbles, and some other drabbles besides that, but I was sick and my crack-muses took over. These were written the same night as the drabble in the previous entry. They are full of angsty!crack filling. The first one is Alter!Series, still not a Gate drabble, and the second was inspired by the first, but is nowhere close to either canon or to Alter!Series.

Alter!Series can be found at the [livejournal.com profile] alter_series LJ community. Check it out.

Goals

“I really am sorry about this.”

“Somehow, I doubt this is your fault.”

Masuta and Roy watched as the Elric brothers made themselves at home in Roy’s library without as much as a by-your-leave. Al normally had much better manners than that, but the prospect of new books had the same effect on his as they did on Ed.

Masuta shifted, looking rather helpless. “All I said was that at home the cherry blossoms should be blooming soon.”

“And that triggered Fullmetal’s need to quest didn’t it?” At the other man’s questioning look, Roy had pity and explained. “As long as I’ve known him, Fullmetal has had a goal that he borders on obsessive about. From what Al has told me, and what others have let slip, it’s been going on since their mother died. Maybe even before that.”

There was an expression on Roy’s face that was a mix of amusement and worry, though he seemed unaware of it. His eyes were fixed on the brothers, who were debating linear world theories that had been suggested over the years. “More than once, I was afraid of what would happen when Ed restored his brother. And I said when, not if, because I will admit that the thought that Ed might not keep that promise never crossed my mind.

But I wondered what would happen if he suddenly lost the one goal that had shaped his world for so long.”

A moment of silence, disturbed only by Ed making a rude noise about some long dead author’s ideas about other worlds.

“Then he did succeed, but he was gone without a trace.”

“He was always looking for something,” Masuta said softly. His eyes were dark as he looked at the two teens, who were arguing about things he didn’t understand. “I didn’t know what he was looking for, only that we were constantly moving.” A small smile. “I know he mentioned home, but foolish me thought he meant London.”

Roy nodded, surprisingly serious. “I used to fear that he would have a breakdown. That he would keep his promise to Al, and then go mad. Either slowly breakdown until all that annoying but brilliant mind was hash, or go mad in a way that would have ended up in a fight. A true fight.

And I’m not sure which of kind of madness I feared more.”

“Mr. Elric,” Masuta replied, “is stronger than that. I don not think he would be as lost as he seemed to think he’d be.”

“Fullmetal has a way of finding near impossible goals to latch onto. He always completes them, but it might take a while.”

At that, Roy pushed himself away from the doorframe, turning to leave. He paused, then looked at Masuta, every bit of his forceful attitude ablaze in his eye.

“You give him that goal, and something for him to quest for. Never be sorry for that.”

As Roy walked away, Masuta thought he heard something else. Something he wasn’t supposed to hear.

He thought he heard Roy say “Because I’m not sure I could defeat him again.”

And, as I said before, directly inspired by the first drabble is

Should Have Planned

“Did you ever think this would happen?”

Roy shrugged, his eyes full of exhaustion. “I try to think of everything, Fullmetal.”

Ed sighed. “I don’t go by that name anymore. Remember, I turned in my watch.”

Like Roy could ever forget that day. It had been a day of blood and screams and death. It had been a day when Ed had dropped two bloodstained silver watches into Roy’s hands. Those gold eyes had been dull, broken, dead.

Much like Al.

Even genius alchemists could be killed. All it took was a bullet in the right place, an accidental misstep, or even a group of fearful people.

Roy had remembered Ed kneeling next to his brother’s body, hands covered in blood where he had tried to save the person who was the center of his world. That was the strongest image Roy had of that day. Of Ed, eyes dull, and hands caked in blood.

“I remember,” Roy said softly. “Ed, please….”

Ed’s eyes were no longer dull. Now they burned with an intensity that frightened Roy. Not that things weren’t bad enough as it was.

“I still doubt that you didn’t even consider this possibility,” Ed interrupted. “I mean, you knew everything back then.” A soft chuckle. “Well, almost everything. So why couldn’t you see this coming?”

“Because,” Roy said quietly. “I could never imagine this happening. As much as you seem to thing otherwise, I am not some all wise, all seeing being. If I was, I would never have sent Al in there alone.”

Silence. Then Ed stood and looked out the window. “There are a lot of them out there, aren’t there?”

Before Roy could answer, there was a loud “ping” and the window Ed stood at rattled violently. “Idiots,” muttered the blond. “Like I would stand at a window I hadn’t modified when I knew they have snipers.” He was very clearly displeased with his enemies.

Roy chuckled. “Well, the military does like to deal with rogue alchemists as fast as possible.”

Something in his voice made Ed look at him again. “I do believe you’re going into shock.”

“Well, having your legs and fingers broken tend to do that,” Roy said a bit sourly. “Don’t know why you felt the need to break my fingers after you took my gloves.”

The look Ed gave him was full of disappointment. “You really haven’t thought about this. If I leave your fingers alone, you can draw an array. And,” now Ed’s smile turned a little feral, “there will be plenty of fire soon enough.”

His attention was once again caught by people outside. “Oh, look, they’re going to try something. Finally. We’ll have to discuss this later.” Teeth were bared in a way to make Roy shift nervously. “I have some cannon fodder to deal with right now.”

Roy closed his eyes. He knew who would win this fight. One mad alchemist, an acknowledged genius, against people who had no idea how to fight against alchemy. It would be a short, bloody fight.

Somehow, Roy didn’t think the alchemists the military would eventually send in would fare any better.

Eyes shut, Roy let the shock take him away.

Fullmetal was right. He really should have had a plan for this.

*cackles* The Angst Whore strikes again! *runs away to hide*

I liked the second one better for some reason...I guess it's cuz I'm so attracted to those "what if Al died" fics XD;

Man. I kill of Roy or Ed, and people yell at me. Kill of Al and drive Ed mad, and it's attractive. *laughs* Interesting how peoples minds work, isn't it?

Glad you like it.

I'm probably better if the uke dies...yeah... XD;;; cuz Al shouldn't have to suffer the pains of being the surviving victim. *so strange*

You've just added another to the waiting list. Thank you very much. *doesn't know whether to be sad or happy about it*

From: [identity profile] icedark-elf.livejournal.com

*sniggers* Aw, you know that you love it. Actually, Dreams was supposed to be Alter!Series as well, but it would be such an Annex story if it fit the canon.

Glad you liked it. *grins*

BTW, I hope you don't mind me taking the liberty to change some places to cover the plot holes.

Not a problem. I'm so bad at remembering my own stories that I probably wouldn't have noticed. *shrugs, then grins*

Now I'm off to attempt to make an Ed bunny.

I really like the second. Bye-Al-mad-Ed is always an interesting concept.

From: [identity profile] icedark-elf.livejournal.com

As I said before, kill Al and drive Ed mad.... *grins* It's fun. I've done the opposite, and this just seemed like fair play. Can't kill Ed all the time. *hums it to some song from the Crow*

No, bunnies! That was not a request for a Crow fusion with FMA!

Somehow, I will blame this on you. *grins* And, as we all know, in FMA, Blame=Love

From: [identity profile] kalikamaxwell.livejournal.com

Yes. It also seems to me it means we're in a perpetual virtual orgy around here, between all the love and people who want other people's babies. XD

*blinks, takes a breath, blinks again* Yep. . .I'm not leaving your journal alone. x3

Heh, sorry. LOOOOOOOOONG day of work and little sleep tend to have me barely coherent. BUT, love the drabs. I really enjoyed the interaction between Roy and Masuta in the first one. I mean, casual observations between the two very different twins is always nice to read. Gives a bit of insight on both of their views and experiences concerning Edward and/or their lives.

Now, Insane!Ed. wo0f, just wo0f! Holding Roy hostage and fighting a mob. *licks screen* x3 Yep I'm on that bandwagon as well. Though I truly love Insane!Al and Dead!Roy. x3!! I'm so going to get smacked for that but it's true. Nothing better then seeing a dead Mustang being avenged by either Riza/Ed or Al/Ed, Jean *drool*, etc etc. Always was a sucker for sap stories though. *scared* But in this one it's great to see Ed out of his gourd after being traumatized by his brother's, most likely, brutal death. Much <33
