Wake Up

The room was quiet. In fact, the only noise came from the wheelchair she sat in. Every time the left wheel turned, it squealed, something that made her tense. In her arms, however, the baby slept peacefully. Behind her, she could almost feel her husband tense as well at the sharp sound.

When they had demanded to be allowed in the room, she was positive that the nurse was going to have a stroke. The poor woman had almost turned purple with shock. Then she had tried to persuade them that it was dangerous to take a baby around the hospital when it was less than a day old. However, it was very hard to argue with the Fuhrer when both he and his wife were set on a course of action.

So that was how she found herself at this bedside, even if she was ordered to stay in a wheelchair for the visit. Staring at the still form, she sought back tears. This was so very, very wrong. Her husband moved to the opposite side of the bed, one hand reaching down to curl around the limp one that sat on the pale covers. She adjusted her grip on the baby and did the same. The chill of the fingers worried her, and she gently rubbed them to warm the cool skin.

“Ed,” Riza sighed, tears threatening to choke her. “Ed, wake up. We need for you to wake up. We need you to open your eyes and to look at your daughter.”

“And she’s definitely yours, Fullmetal,” Roy added from the other side. “She’s already relieved herself on me once.” Even though the words were sarcastic, there was worry in Roy’s eyes. Riza could see it. She also saw something else.

Roy was scared.

Not that she blamed him. Riza was scared as well.

“He’s being an ass again, Ed. Feel free to ignore him.” Squeezing the fingers under hers, she continued. “She’s got your eyes, Ed. I can see them already. You should wake up so you can see them as well.”

Something warm trickled down her cheeks, and it took a moment for her to realize they were tears. “We named her Patricia, just like all three of us agreed,” she got out before her throat closed altogether. The words she wanted to say were trapped behind the sobs she refused to let out.

“Wake up, Fullmetal. Wake up… Ed.” Roy said for her, his own hand tight around Ed’s. “We’re happy, all three of us. Only it’s all four of us. Don’t you dare leave when we got everything right.” There was something dark in Roy’s eyes, an anger he refused to let loose.

“Don’t deny yourself this, Ed. Let yourself be happy, with us. Don’t give up on us.”

Riza stood and lifted Ed’s hand. She brushed his knuckles ever so softly against the sleeping baby’s face. Then she placed a light kiss on his hand. “We love you, and we know you feel the same for us. Wake up and be with us.”

There was a soft knock on the door, and then the nurse stuck her head in. She frowned at seeing Riza standing, and told them they had to return to their room. Riza saw the sorrow in her eyes. This one had seen too many patients die.

Ed, Riza thought firmly, was not going to be one of them.

“One more minute,” Roy said softly. A sharp nod and the door slid shut. Once it clicked, Roy leaned forward and pressed his lips to Ed. The kiss lasted only a moment, then Roy pulled back slowly. “The house is too quite. We need your noisy mouth to keep things entertaining.” With that, he stepped away from the bed.

Doing her best to not squish the baby, Riza copied his action. It felt strange to kiss Ed like this, so still and unresponsive. Ed was anything but unresponsive to her and Roy’s kisses. It felt wrong to kiss him like this. She pulled away sooner than Roy, her eyes shut. “Wake up soon, Ed,” she whispered, sitting back in the chair, “and I’ll give you a real kiss.”

She let Roy wheel her out and didn’t look back. She didn’t think Roy did either.

Nation Loses Hero
Assassination Attempt Kills Protector

Edward Elric, also known as the Fullmetal Alchemist, died last night at Central Wing Hospital. During yesterday’s assassination attempt on Fuhrer Mustang, Elric was injured while protecting for the Fuhrer and his wife, who was heavily pregnant. Witnesses say that the attack was sudden enough that Elric, who is known for not needing an alchemy array, did not have time to do more than thrown himself between the gunmen and the couple. He was rushed to the hospital and listed in critical condition.

This morning, the Fuhrer made a statement to the press from the hospital, where his wife was recovering from having their first child.

“This country has suffered a terrible loss. Edward Elric protected not only me, but my wife and daughter as well, something I will always thank him for. We are not the only ones he ever protected, though. Over the years, he has earned the title that the people of our country gave him. He was the People’s Alchemist, someone who was dedicated to helping everyone, and I know it made him happy to be thought of so well. Edward Elric was someone who tried to save everyone, and I have no words for how deep my sorrow is that that need to protect has ended this way.

There is no way that we can ever replace what we’ve lost.”

Soon after, the Fuhrer returned to his wife. He did declare the country in a state of mourning for the next week.

Edward Elric is survived by his younger brother, Alphonse Elric, sister-in-law, Winry Elric-Rockbell, and two nephews. The funeral will be a private affair, but a public memorial service will be held, the date to be released at a later date.
