“This may be Heaven, little girl, but even Heaven must be lighted with fire in the dark if there be humans.”
The girl looked up, her eyes as violet as his, as violet as everyone who lived in this place. “But this isn’t Heaven.”
Her voice was soft, but not as childlike as it should have been coming from that body. He remembered the first time he heard her speak. It hadn’t been in the form she wore now. He had woken up in the darkness of the place between worlds, and heard a creature speak with a child’s voice.
It had followed him, even when he tried to chase it away. Eventually, it had changed, separating into the girl and a large dog.
She hadn’t known her name, but that was okay, he didn’t know his. What he did know was that anger filled this child-who-wasn’t, and that’s why he let her follow him. Her anger was like his.
They were trapped, all three of them, in this place of cold and of darkness. Other things had attacked him, but when he touched them, he knew what he had to do. One touch was all he needed to bring a little bit of fire to this place. To bring heat and light to a place filled with darkness.
Nor was she defenseless. The first time they were attacked by things hungering for warmth, he had frozen, unsure of what to do. She and the dog had merged together once again, tearing into the things. Afterwards, she offered him up bloody chunks of flesh, and he had eaten them. As he did, things came back to him. Memories of warmth and life.
And so they had continued on, traveling together as a type of family. She would take adult form sometimes, just as he would take child form when needed. But they were both more comfortable in their natural selves. So, that was how they had gone on, for years and years.
Then a bright fire came to the darkness between worlds. It traveled beyond, vanishing into the distance faster than any could chase. That flash of light sent those who lived in the dark into a feeding frenzy that lasted forever. Even as they fought one another, trying to relive that feeling of brilliance and painful heat, the three who traveled drew back.
Something had been familiar about that light.
So they watched and waited. And when the light returned, centuries later, moving much slower, they were ready.
They watched as the light fought against the hands that clung to it. They did not try, for to try was to die, burnt away by something too big for them to consume. They watched, to see what happened to the light, to see if it could escape.
Because if it could escape, maybe they could as well.
Then golden eyes flashed, and both of them stiffened.
“Nina,” said the girl, her eyes flickered from violet to a different shade, then back. “I am Nina.”
Standing next to her, the man blinked, his own eyes returning to violet. “I’m Kimberly.” He watched as the light vanished into doorways that lead elsewhere.
A small hand grasped his. “Ed-niisan went through the Gate,” Nina said, her voice as soft as ever.
“If Fullmetal can do it, so can we,” replied Kimberly.
They shared a look, and both began to grin.
For even those who lie mad in the dark can hope.

sv_chan's request. It's 581 words long, and called
Three stones decorated the small hillside cemetery. Three stones, pale and well kept. Three stones that bore the name of Elric.
Ed sat on the grass before the stones, eyes sad as the sun reflected off the white stone.
Three years, they had been happy. Three years, they had discovered about one another, and enjoyed each others company.
He remembered when they had first started to actually date. The debates they would have over everything from if there was a God or not to what was better, vanilla or chocolate ice cream. On the big issues, even if they couldn’t agree, they would accept each others opinion.
The day that she had accepted his ring, Ed had been ecstatic. He swore he couldn’t be any happier.
Then came the day she told him she was pregnant.
Her face had been glowing. Suddenly, Ed could understand what Hughes had always been going on about.
The day that their son was born, he had finally understood what his father had talked about. There was not equivalent trade when it came to this. There was only love and the willingness to do whatever he needed to do to keep them happy.
And Ed would have done anything.
Then the day had come when everything had fallen to pieces. He had come back from a mission that had taken far too long, and found her on the floor, unconscious.
She looks like Mom, he thought, then shook himself. That was the last thing he wanted to think about. Not after what finding his mother like that had led to.
The time after that was a blur. He had spent so much time researching, him and Al. They had worked hard, trying to find a cure for what sickened her. They found nothing. Not even what was killing her.
She had been pregnant again. They hadn’t discovered that for a while, not even her.
She died trying to give birth. The baby, his daughter, had followed.
“Daddy?”
Startled, Ed turned away from the stones, turning to look at his son. Golden eyes, his eyes, stared at him from a dark-skinned face. “Whacha doing, Daddy?”
Smiling softly, Ed gathered his son to him. “I thought you were playing with Uncle Al and his daughter.”
His son squirmed, pale hair catching the light as he settled in his father’s lap. “Uncle Al is cool, but Pinni is stupid.”
“She is not. She’s just little, that’s all.”
“She tried to throw a wrench at me.”
Ed chuckled. “Then she’s just like her mom.” His smile faded, just a little, as he glanced back at the stones.
Sensing the mood, his son looked at the stones. “What’re those?”
Hugging his son tightly, Ed buried his face in the hair that reminded him of Al’s slightly darker color. “Remember when I told you that Mommy had gone away, and that your big brother and little sister had gone with her?”
The child nodded. “That’s so we don’t forget her.”
“Oh.”
They sat there quietly for a minute, both looking at the stones. Then Ed stood up, scooping his son, Leo, with him. “Come on. Aunt Winry should have pestered Uncle Al into cooking some food by now. Let’s go eat.”
“Yay!” Wiggling out of his father’s arms, Leo began to run for the home that Al and Winry had set up shop in. Ed started to follow, then turned around one last time.
“Bye, Rose. I’ll visit you guys soon.”

The sound of rain upon the roof brought old memories rushing back, the damp chilling his deeply… but in an old familiar way he would never grow tired of.
It seemed like it had been raining all the important times of his life. It had rained the night Mom had died, it had rained the night they had tried to bring her back. It had rained the day that Ed had almost died, all three times. And the day they had gotten his body back for good, the sky had been crying for joy.
He could remember the soft hiss of the rain as it came down, cold and shocking against new skin. Somehow, that sensation had become one of his favorites, though.
Al remembered the first time Ed had kissed him.
They had gotten into an awful fight over Al telling his brother that they were going to get his arm and leg back no matter what. Ed had stormed off, not even slowing down as he stepped out under darkening skies. Not that Al had stopped him. No matter how patient he was, Al was no saint, and he needed time to cool off just as much as Ed had.
But half an hour later, the sky had opened up, and the first of the winter storms had hit with a furious blow, and Ed was not yet come home. So Al had gone looking for him, bundled up in raincoat and carrying an extra. After only a bit of searching, he found Ed down by the creek, totally ignoring the rain.
Still a bit upset with him, Al had gone up and dumped the jacket on him before turning and walking into the semi-shelter of some fallen trees. “Niisan, stop being a stubborn ass and get out of the rain.”
Silently, Ed had done so. He was quiet as he stood up, slid the raincoat on, and moved to join Al in the shelter. That made Al slightly nervous, as his brother did nothing silently. Not if he wasn’t plotting something.
For a minute, they leaned quietly against the trees around them as the rain filled the silence.
“Al, why are you so insistent that I get my arm and leg fixed? Automail works just as well, if not better, for the most part. So why, besides some misplaced feelings of guilt, do you feel like we should try to fix it?”
Ed’s voice had been soft and Al didn’t reply at first. “It’s not just because it’s my fault your arm is gone,” he finally said. “It’s that you fixed me, but you chose not to do it for yourself. Like you’re punishing yourself.”
A soft chuckle came from Ed. “Al, I love you, but you’re being an idiot.” Before Al could do more than squawk in his own defense, Ed continued. “Now, if you’re actually going to listen to me instead of deciding that I’m not getting my flesh and blood back because of I feel guilty over you, I’ll give you a real answer.”
Moving away from his tree, Ed walked over to where Al was still trying to defend himself from the ‘idiot’ comment. Catching his brother’s chin in his hand, Ed had held Al still long enough to brush their lips together.
“I love you,” Ed said, pulling back just enough to actually speak. He was still so close that Al could feel his lips move with the words. “I almost died getting you back your body. I lost my arm to bring back your soul.” Gentle fingers brushed Al’s cheek as golden eyes met silver, and Ed brushed another kiss against his brother’s lips. “I don’t want anything to happen to you. And while I know I can’t protect you from everything, I can say no to this. It’s not worth the risk to get back just a few limbs when there are other options.”
Al opened his mouth once or twice, trying to form some reply. Unable to do so with Ed standing so close, body warm against his own, Al decided to respond with a kiss of his own.
When they pulled apart, breathless, Al managed a small “oh.”
Ed had smiled. “Let’s go home.” He turned and then sneezed. “Well, shit. I hate being sick.”
Giggling, Al reached out took his brother’s hand. “Now who’s the idiot,” he asked, laughing. Cursing, Ed had chased him home.
Al liked the rain now. It used to mean pain and suffering, now it was the sign that someone really loved him out there.

I've discovered, plotting out these drabbles, that the more I do, the stranger they get. Though it seemed perfectly logical to me that Nina would be angery over what happened to her, an emotion that few people attribute to small children. *grimaces* I work with the public, and I see how pissy small kids can get every single day.
Glad you enjoyed.
