Silver

The experiments had been going well. Up to a certain point, it was routine to do things to prepare the subjects. Pulling the darkness from hearts had been something all of the people in the lab were good at by this point, but the possibility of success, well, that just made them work harder.

Ansem watched as they set both subjects into their places, strapping them down and collecting the equipment they needed.

First would be Sephiroth. Then Cloud. If that succeeded, then they would try the procedure on Zack.

This time, it would be a success, he was -sure- of it.

When the test started, he wasn't the only one who watched in interest.

And then something unusual happened as they began to pull the darkness from.

Sephiroth's hair began to fade.

Not vanish. As the man on the table arched up, noises of distress and pain escaping him, the color began to leech from his hair. The black faded away, and as they watched, it settled into a metallic color.

Pale silver.

Years

He was confused, and scared, and Cloud wanted to go home. He didn't understand what the King was doing, or why he was doing it to them, but he had seen Sephiroth and Zack here as well. They had done something to Sephiroth, but he didn't know what. All he knew was that it had made the General scream, and he didn't think anything could do that.

If it made someone like Sephiroth scream, it must have hurt really bad.

And now they were looking at him and he tried to squirm away. But they had strapped him down, and all Cloud could do was watch them as they pressed needles into him, and talk about darkness and how it must have succeeded this time with the physical changes.

Something dark was brought over, and Cloud could feel something nasty about it, even as they started to force it into him.

It hurt.

Worse than anything Cloud had ever felt before in his life, it hurt. It was icy cold. Colder than the creeks in winter, when all the ice was coming down. And hot at the same time. He couldn't help the whimper.

Then the pain really started, and he couldn't escape it. He screamed, even after his throat hurt too bad to scream, he screamed. For what seemed like years, the pain continued, and he struggled more and more as things got even more painful.

Then, everything just faded.

Storm

Sephiroth did not know what they had expected when they had taken him, Zack, and Cloud. He knew it had something to do with the heartless, and knew the king had some ideas of how to battle them.

It gave them no right to do what they had done, though.

He felt odd, and the pale hair that fell into his face seemed wrong. The scientists were chattering on about how he was their great success, but he paid them no mind as he examined the feelings the sight of pale hair gave him.

And then he realized that he didn't feel wrong at all.

Only one thing seemed to matter in the world, and he felt his eyes continuously drifting back towards the pale child, even after they had taken the boy from the room. Something about him drew Sephiroth, and the man wondered why his attention was pulled that way.

The others...meant nothing. He did not care, did not hate them, did not fear them. Instead, he wanted to punish them for their boldness in making use of him.

He felt nothing, anymore. Only a sense of wrong that he knew was just memories. There was little emotion to him, and it all tied to another person.

One of them was talking about how they had taking Sephiroth's darkness away. About how he'd be the perfect fighter for the light.

They hadn't realized that one needed to care to fight for anything.

And he wanted his darkness back.

But there was only one way to deal with them, and he smiled slowly.

Outside, he could feel the storm building, and he simply reached out to unlock it.

And the heartless swarmed in as if they were a storm.

Friends

There were heartless everywhere, and Zack cursed as he had to drop Cloud to destroy another one. He didn't know what had happened, but he had heard the others screaming after the scientists had taken them away. Then two of the men had come to collect Zack. As they had been walking, he had come across others looking at Cloud and the strange black mark that was spreading on his back.

Zack had been ready to deck a few people then, and would have if the heartless hadn't appeared to make hitting the men to escape pointless.

Instead, the men had run, and Zack had bolted towards Cloud.

He'd tried to wake Cloud up, but all he got was a vacant stare, blue eyes focused on nothing. Zack had been worried enough about that, but the black smear on Cloud's back hadn't helped matters at all. It was on his shoulder, and cold to the touch.

Didn't have time to worry too much over it at the moment, though, and Zack was just pleased to find his weapon in the same room. Seems they didn't have a lot of places to put things wherever they had brought them, and Zack was thankful for the fact.

Meant less searching while he looked for Seph.

It was harder to move, to defend himself, while dragging Cloud along, but Zack refused to leave him behind.

They were friends, just like him and Seph, and Zack never left friends behind.

Music

The pain continued for so long, he thought there was nothing but pain. It was something that throbbed through his bones and brain and never seemed to end.

Eventually, though, the throbbing took on a pace, a beat, and with it things seemed to settle. Slowly, he began to lose things, and he couldn't remember what it was he was forgetting. Instead, a steady sound filled his ears, his head.

It was soothing, a sound that made him want to reach out and take it and curl around it until it made all the pain go away. Thumping close-by, he shifted towards it, wanting to make the pain stop, and the sound, almost a musical beat, promised to do that.

With each repeat of the sound, a steady thump-thump, he felt more focused, able to feel something besides the hurt that was everything. Everything except the emptiness. That hollow feeling in him.

It slowly filled up everything. It was all he heard, and he could almost see it pulsing in his vision, the darkness fading some as he registered how close the sound was.

There was a person there, and a glow seemed to radiate from them. And in the center of the glow was red.

He reached for it, wanting the pain to stop, and the emptiness to go away.

Strangers

When Cloud moved, Zack felt something tight in his chest relax. Movement was good, it meant his friend was going to be okay.

At least until he saw the yellow eyes that looked back at him, and the way the darkness began to spread faster on Cloud's skin. Until he saw the claws that tipped Cloud's fingers as the blond tore at him.

Heartless, but not.

Yelping, Zack spun, not letting go of Cloud, but jarring the kid's hands away from him.

As he did, another set of claws caught his leg, and a third his shoulder, and Zack spun more.

They were everywhere. There wasn't any room to use his sword, and Zack refused to let go of Cloud and abandon him to the things around him. Claws continued to catch at him, fangs as well, and Zack continued to struggle, even as he started to slow from exhaustion and bloodloos.

And something else caught his eyes.

At the end of the hall, ignored by the mass of black, was Sephiroth. He stood there, eyes on Zack, hair a color Zack had never seen before. Even as fire suddenly sprouted behind Sephiroth, the pair looked at each other.

"Seph?" Zack said softly before shoving off more heartless.

When he looked back, Sephiroth was walking away.

At that moment, Cloud attacked again.

He hit hard, and Zack found himself on the floor, and pain shot through him as Cloud dug those claws into his chest. There was a tug, and Zack understood.

Cloud was trying to steal his heart.

But it was hard to steal what was given, and he saw the heartless ignoring Cloud the same way they had ignored Seph.

There was no way that Zack was getting out of this. Not in the middle of all of them, not when he was hurt already, and still slow from the constant drugging. With Sephiroth on their side, they could have. Alone...no.

But maybe Cloud could.

And so Zack did what he could for his friend.

So Zack gave Cloud his heart.

He saw a wing sprout from Cloud's back, and had the last remains of worry, then blue eyes looked at him, and he gave a faint smile before everything stopped.

Cloud would be okay.
