Bizzare ficlet thing.
When the Heartless started to appear, they scrambled to find a way to fight back.
The first experiments were failures. The people died, fading away and becoming the very things that they had been trying to merge.
Hojo was the one who had come up with the solution. Not that he shared it.
Genesis was first. His genes had been duplicated from the only subject who had survived. She was mad, but she had survived.
Then one of the guards had gotten too friendly with the subject, and she had become pregnant. The child was born, Angeal, and he was the lone one. The guard had been killed by an upsurge of heartless just months into the pregnancy, and none of the other attempted pregnancies carried to term.
He had developed even faster than the first, and he and Genesis were raised together. Angeal was the first to discover the ability to fade into the earth, to become like the shadows his mother had been contaminated with.
So Hojo took her genetics and worked on trying to fuse them with adults. Years passed, full of failures, and then a cousin of Angeal’s, the son of his father’s sister, joined the program. Hojo decided that he would try something different.
One of the stronger shadows was used this time, more human, to see if that would help.
Someone in the lab said Hojo’s smile was the most frightening thing ever.
Zack Fair joined his older cousin Angeal and Genesis in their training, learning to use the gifts they had gotten from the heartless, fading in and out of their world and the dark places, moving through the earth as if it was nothing, using it for defense.
Sometimes, Zack wondered if that was what triggered the wave, the swarm of heartless that consumed everything.
The only reason he and the other two got out with their hearts was because they seemed to confuse the heartless.
They ended up fleeing, like everyone else who survived, as darkness had taken their world.
He had gotten separated from the others, and used the corridors to move from the remains of his world to another.
Then, one day, he met a boy with a mess of brown hair and bright blue eyes.

Can't you imagine the fun the first time he does one of those "melt into the ground" things around them?

Sort of half-Heartless!Zack, but with his heart. Him meeting up with Sora is going to be awesome, and the bouncy will probably kill Hollow Bastion dead. =D

…now the thing about Sora-having-been-a-shadow-and-then-Anti-form is poking at me again. *pats it on the head somewhat absent-mindedly*
