"Hayes! Hayes! You had better not be asleep up there!"

Muttering to himself, Jacson climbed up the ladder that rose up to the sentry tower. It wasn't much, but it did let them get a view above the trees, which was useful when the Wutanese might be burning the forest around them. Warning was always good.

It was also a good place to fall asleep on days when nothing was happening. Like today.

Jacson didn't want to have to deal with the General's displeasure when he found out that someone else had gone to sleep up there.

"You are a loud mouthed bastard," came a low rumble when he got higher up, muttering curses to himself.

"Well, if you weren't asleep, maybe I wouldn't have to yell for you. Then what would you...."

His voice died as he got high enough to actually look in.

Cloud was sound asleep, using Hayes leg for a pillow and snoring softly. Jacson couldn't help but grin. Kid was adorable.

"We're all totally whipped," Hayes noted calmly. He ran a hand over Cloud's hair. "He wanted to come play guard with me. Kid fell asleep about an hour ago."

Jacson...really couldn't disagree with the older man. "Good thing the Wutai people haven't figured out our weakness for adorable brats," he said finally. "Anyway, your watch is up."

Both men looked at the boy, who shifted a bit at all the noise, then resettled, murmuring something as he snuggled against Hayes more.

"I think I'm staying. Try not to kick me. Kid has a good idea."

Snorting softly, Jacson climbed up into what little space remained, settling so he could see outside. Hayes was getting comfortable against the back wall, hand resting on Cloud's back, eyes shutting.

Kid really did have all of them whipped.

Sitting down to the stuff they called food, most of the fighters were still asleep over their plates. It was early yet, and there had been fighting the day before. Which meant that most of them were just plain tired. The injured were in the med tent, those who didn't need constant supervision were either in their own tents, or here.

Some days, the war just seemed to be dragging on forever.

"And then, the cat started to talk! It was really cool. But then the horns went off, and I woke up. That wasn't fun."

Talking rapidly, the little blond thing that followed Sephiroth everywhere bounced in after the man, who looked alert enough, though those who had served with him for a few months could tell he was more sluggish than normal. Seemed that even the all mighty Sephiroth could get worn down.

"But that's okay. I don't know what the cat said, but I think it was going to be mean. He didn't look like a nice cat."

Cloud continued to talk, even as Sephiroth silently picked him up, setting him on the rail that ran the length of the serving area. The kid, used to this now, just scooted along the rail, pushing a tray in front of him, collecting food. He smiled brightly at everyone, even when all he got was sleepy grins back.

Still chattering when he hit the end of the rail and Sephiroth set him back on the floor, Cloud collected his tray and followed the man, talking about his dream.

Such animation was contagious, though, and eventually others began to perk up as well. Couldn't do much else when smacked in the face with such a energetic person.

The boy was good for more than just Sephiroth, it seemed.

Sephiroth was watching the fuss with a vague sort of confusion that told him that yet something else had been skipped in his training. Those who were most fond of Cloud were talking of gifts and such, and he finally was forced to ask. Still, he managed to keep it to one of those who he trusted to not act as if he was odd for not knowing.

"It's his birthday. One of the guys asked a few weeks ago, and Cloud told him."

Hendricks was looking at him slightly expectantly, and Sephiroth was forced to confess that he did not see the cause of the fuss yet. It must have been clear, because the older man continued.

"When someone you care about has a birthday, you tend to give them a gift. Sort of a celebration of their being born and there kind of thing."

Sephiroth frowned slightly. "What would one normally give?" he asked slowly, still not sure if he understood this tradition, but Cloud had been bouncing more than normal, so it was obviously important to the boy.

"Something useful, or something that you know they would like." Hendricks grinned. "Which is what has been driving people nuts. Cloud is probably going to end up with quite a bit of gear, as none of us can get a hold of something that we think the kid might like all the way out here. Besides, he's pretty determined to be like the rest of us, might as well get him stuff that fits his size."

Drawing out a few more details, Sephiroth finally nodded. Something useful. He could do that.

Cloud was already doing well with his blade work, and it would explain some of the requests from the men for items sent from Midgar, but Sephiroth was a bit at a loss on what to get Cloud.

It was the gleam at his own wrist that gave him an answer.

///

Cloud was having the best birthday, ever. There were a lot more people telling him happy birthday than he had ever gotten before, and they all had such neat things to give him.

"Here."

Blinking at the box that Sephiroth had suddenly shoved in front of him, Cloud took it. It wasn't big, but that was okay. He knew that he'd like anything that Sephiroth would give him.

Opening the box, he saw a bracer with two materia slotted on it. Blinking, he looked them over. Green and blue, linked, with a red sitting just below the item. Suddenly, he looked at Seph. "Does this mean I get to start learning materia?"

Sephiroth nodded. "Yes, but those are special ones. I want you to promise that you won't ever take them off."

Nodding, Cloud worked at putting the item on, trying to figure out what it was he had been given. He knew he wouldn't be able to do a summons for a long time, at least from what he heard the others say, so he was kind of curious on what this would do.

Sephiroth reached out a hand and touched each materia. 'Revive," he said of the green, then the blue. "Final Attack. And when you are strong enough for it, Phoenix." A touch to the red one."You'll have to get stronger before you can use Phoenix, but you'll have it when you are ready."

Staring at the red materia a little longer, Cloud set the box down carefully, then hugged Sephiroth. Really tight.

"Thank you," he said softly, smiling when he felt the hand rest on his his head.

Really was the best birthday ever.

They had been at this for a while, but Cloud refused to stop, even though Jacson could see the boy was tired. Being one of the better materia users in camp, he had been elected to help Cloud learn to use the materia he had been given.

Starting him out on something relatively small, he had worked Cloud through Bolt, Ice, and Fire already. Restore as well. Nice spells, easy for beginners to pick up. Earth was slightly harder, stronger. Cloud had done well at the first four materia, but he was struggling a bit with his first Quake spell.

He'd been setting the lessons at one materia a week, which Cloud was quite happy with. His main goal seemed to be able to use the materia that Sephiroth had gotten him, and the kid was nothing if not dedicated to doing things like his hero. Jacson found it cute, but it was not helping Cloud's frustration at trying to get the spell right.

"Kiddo, relax. Glaring at the materia is not going to make it work any better." He paused, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Nor is glaring at me. Just relax. You got the others. Remember how it felt?" A slow nod from the boy, who frowned, but wasn't glaring anymore. Which was good. Frustration wouldn't help him cast at all.

"Just try that. It might not work right at first. Materia are finicky like that, but it'll work soon enough. You just have to...."

The ground flew up under his feet, and Jacson grunted as he hit dirt.

Cloud gave him a tight, pleased smile. "Got it," he said.

Gods, the kid had been spending too much time with the General. He had the smug grin down and everything.

It had been a decoy.

Once the General had realized, he ordered the troops back to camp. As it was, they came back too late to keep the enemy out, though those left behind had done a good show at keeping the invaders away from the vital spots in camp. And with the reinforcement of those returning, it did not take long to force the attackers out.

It was when they were scouting the camp for damage and any lingering surprises that Baker found him.

For a moment, he hadn't registered what he saw. Blood hid blond hair, and blue eyes were glassy, empty of any emotion at all. The blade was buried hilt deep in flesh, and Baker swallowed, hard.

"Cloud?"

His voice was soft, but it was enough to draw Cloud's attention to him. The boy was obviously in shock, and started to shiver as the SOLDIER moved closer.

"He was gonna take me away," he said, voice almost silent. If Baker hadn't been enhanced, he probably wouldn't have heard him.

Picking up Cloud, he spared one last look at the Wutai fighter, dagger still in the man's eye, several other obvious injuries showing just how well Cloud had been taught.

"It's okay, Cloud," he said, already moving to find Sephiroth. "He won't try to take you away anymore."

Holding the boy as the child shook, he couldn't help but feel sorry for him.

What a way to have a first kill.

*chuckles* I'm glad you are enjoying it. I'm having a lot of fun writing the stuff down.

Cloud is settling in, and everyone is used to each other finally, which means a lot when Cloud is being adorable. Which he can't help. It's like..his superpower or something.

He's just a kid, so it made perfect sense to me that he's not all that powerful yet when it comes to materia. That'll come with practice, but he's got to get it first.

*grins* Well, I'm not sure if Cloud is going to guilt himself after he gets over his shock. He was being taught to kill, and he's well aware of it. Still, it was hard for him to kill for the first time. And I bet it did make the man start when this little blond thing came up fighting.
