He hadn't expected that, though he really should have. Aeris was always around, even on the battlefield.
Cloud held Kadaj, the remnant gasping for air, body broken and tossed aside like a toy by Sephiroth. It was a feeling Cloud could empathize with, though he had never gone to the lengths Kadaj had to please his "mother".
The scent of flowers tickled Cloud's nose, and his arm tightened a bit on the child. Already, his edges were starting to fade, the same bright green as lifestream, as Sephiroth's eyes. Sparks, bits of the boy, were starting to break away, and he reached for someone Cloud couldn't see.
But he could smell the flowers she had grown.
Mother, Kadaj said, and Cloud swallowed, hard.
At least, this time, as he died, the boy had chosen a much better mother than his first one had been.
Maybe he'd be happy there, and Cloud wished that he could see who Kadaj reached for, even as the boy faded completely.
Hopefully, when his time came, Cloud would be able to reach for the same hand, and happy smile. He knew Aeris was smiling. It was as much her as her flowers.
The scent faded, and Cloud finally stood.
Maybe, next time, it would be his turn.
