Some days, Cloud wasn't sure why they did this. It didn't seem worth the hassle, the fights, the way people ripped at each other.

Then, days like this happened.

Days where they were content with this. When any arguing was good natured, teasing. The days where all four of them were able to meet and simply relax around each other.

Those days didn't happen often, not between their schedules and their attitudes. The strange little foursome he found himself in always did work better when it wasn't all of them. But the days it did....

They were what kept the four together. No matter how much they bickered, how much they hit all the spots that did the most damage, these days, the days of calm, or relaxation, of simply -knowing- that the others understood, those balanced out all the bad days.

It was a very, very careful balance, and one wrong thing would make this all spiral out of control.

Cloud found he liked it that way. The hint of imminent destruction appealed to him. Twisted, yes, but true. Tifa, when he had mentioned it to her, had said it was his masochist side showing.

He wondered if she was right.

Not that it would have stopped him.

He...cared for the others, and that was all too rare for him anymore. He didn't reach out as much anymore, and his circle of special people was a very set number. Maybe when Marlene and Denzel had children of their own one day, he would care for them as well, but he had a feeling what he had now was all he was going to be allowed to have.

And he lost people so easily.

So he cherished these days, those little bits of hope and happiness that balanced everything else out.

Something was coming, and he was greedy enough to take what he could before things all fell apart.

Self-serving, yes, but he couldn't help himself.

He was only human, after all.

It was the blond hair.

Vincent couldn't really help it. He seemed to have a thing for pale hair and blue eyes. Lucretia, well, she was special in more than one way. Before her, he had liked blondes. After her, he had liked blonds. She had been the exception, apparently.

Still, watching his other lovers kiss had a very pleasing aspect to it. Cloud hated it, but he was the most delicate looking of the bunch. Not that Vincent would ever tell him. He left that to Cid, who seemed to enjoy teasing Cloud about it.

Rufus was the refined one, his mother's looks with his father's coloring. How the President had spawned such a child still confused Vincent, but he accepted it. And enjoyed it.

The rough edged one of their little group was Cid, and he seemed to enjoy the position, often telling the others that he was the manly one of the group. That usually lead the others to ganging up on him, which Vincent was sure was Cid's goal.

It was very nice to watch them together. Blond hair being mussed up, blue eyes looking at him all hungrily.

He stood out, the shadow to their bright colors, but he didn't mind, not at all.

Who else but him got to play in all that bright tumble that was their bed?

The dreams were the beginning.

Cloud, night after night, waking up in a cold sweat, panting for air and fingers tearing holes in the sheets. Rufus had complained at first until he realized that the nightmares were getting worse, not better. Vincent had worried, the demons could feel things changing, and none of them liked it. Cid had complained as well, but he, along with Rufus, had made sure to send out messages to all their people to keep an eye out for anything strange.

Especially the day Cloud woke up with green cat eyes.

They faded, of course.

Before long, rumors of a man in a black coat began to spread. People still remembered Sephiroth, even after all this time, and they still feared him.

Like a hound, Cloud began to track the man. Sometimes one of the others went with him, sometimes he went alone. It caused fights. Over him going alone, over who he took with him, over him simply vanishing from time to time.

The obsession to find and kill Sephiroth was tearing them apart.

Then, one morning, they woke up to find him cooking breakfast in the kitchen, sword close by, true, but he was there.

"I'm not going out again," he said. "I won't let him take anything else from me."

If Sephiroth wanted Cloud, the man would have to come to him, and Cloud was ready for it. But he refused to let anything else he cherished to be taken away, by his actions or by Sephiroth's.

Cloud would not lose them. Not to something like this.

Never.

*does so love causing urges like that*

And art is good. I write things for pictures. *nods*

Nap is where I'm going after I reply to everyone. *nods*

Getting to a serious part of the stories. Sephiroth is not a good thing. At all.

Was that a hint? XD

And if I did draw you a picture, what would you want to see?

I just re-read these, and I think the best one is where Vincent is commenting on their looks- especially the one about Cloud. And he is definitely the negative to their positive: black to blonde, red to blue.
