Just finished The Count of Monte Cristo. Found a copy this morning for cheap, so I picked it up and read it. Good. Very, very good. I can see why it was so popular, especially as a serial. Been watching the anime as well, and the focuses are very different between the two. Though I couldn't yell "boycrush" as much at the book.

I'd really recommend the book for people. Lot more sympathetic for Edmond, and I liked how it ended.

What copy did you get? 'cause I picked up a copy of the Count published by Penguin ( http://www.amazon.com/Count-Monte-Cristo-Penguin-Classics/dp/0140449264/ref=sr_1_1/002-3639349-8096803?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1186972922&sr=1-1 )and it has footnotes in the back by chapter to clarify various references made in the story itself, plus it's unabridged. So you get over 1100 pages of intrigue, double dealings, double crosses, and manipulation.

Man, it's one of my favorites books ever. I really, really love the Count - I cheered him on on his righteous vengeance quest all the way.

Gankutsuou is, well, loosely based on the novel. In the book, Albert is but a minor character needed to start the whole revenge scheme - the Count is the main character despite the subplots. In the anime, Ahouberu is the main character, and the shonen ai fanservice is so thick one might choke on it.*o* Albert, Franz and Eugenie are completely different characters.

Also, it never ceases to amuse me how in the passage from book to anime Albert and Franz went from straight to boycrush all the way, and Eugenie from butch dyke to straight pretty princess.XD

They did an amazing job with that live action movie a few years back; I loved the effects. Up there with Phantom of the Opera and Memoirs of a Geisha, which is really hard to find.

I need to work on Ganku some more... I only have the first DVD.
