Summary: Shinra isn't as solid as it looks.
A/N: While
kemis was playing distractor with shiny fanart, I came across an picture of Sephiroth and Zack. Seph was in his normal gear, but, in the other frame, Zack was all ninja'd up. And, as is the nature of my brain, I got most of a universe, with just a few details needing to be ironed out. They were ironed, and now we have Ninja Zack fic. Used another of the words from the 250 given as my prompt, adding even more oddness to that fucked up mathematics. Four words should not equal over 4000 words of fic. *pouts*
Thank you to
forgottenlover for the title.
Consequence of Blood
It was the rumors that made everyone so wary. Shinra had always been enough to make people wary, and it wasn’t hard to believe that people had been planting in spies into the company since it had been formed.
When they started to hire scientists who had no record of ever having worked on a weapons project, more attention was, discreetly of course, paid to the company.
More spies were sent.
Of course, most were discovered and…dealt with. Not all, though. Nowhere close to all.
Then Shinra built their first reactor.
More spies were sent and dealt with. And, yet again, a few got through.
Those who were successful were those who had someone on their side. Like one of Shinra’s better scientists.
Grimoire sighed as he watched his son pass the physical testing required for a person to even be considered for entry into the Turks with flying colors. The boy had been trained well by his mother when he had been visiting her. And Grimoire knew that he was more than sharp enough mentally to pass any tests they set him on. That was his doing.
The Turks thought they were getting themselves a prize.
He knew better.
His son was as proud of Wutai as his mother was, and there were small rumbles that Shinra was looking to take over the world, and wouldn’t stop until they owned all of it. That made some people nervous, so it hadn’t been a surprise when he had gotten the message saying the boy was coming to visit early.
Some people thought the decision of him and his wife to live half a world away from each other odd, but it really wasn’t. She loved her homeland, and he enjoyed his work. They had their times together and were content with their lives. And their son had never seemed to have a problem.
“He’s good. Any idea why he wants to join the group?”
A moment of tension, then he realized it was Veld and just shook his head. The Turks leader made a soft humming sound, and then settled in to watch.
Veld thought he was good. That pretty much guaranteed his son’s spot in the Turks.
Grimoire had done his part.
He hoped his child didn’t die because of this.
///
It had taken years, but he had finally gotten to a useful post.
Looking outside as the snow fell, he made soft noise. Home had had snow, but nothing like this. It had to be two foot deep out there and still coming down fast.
He was glad the mansion was well stocked. He didn’t think any of them would be leaving the mansion for a while.
Lovely.
On one hand, he would finally able to really start his mission. On the other, it meant he was trapped in the same building as Hojo.
The man wasn’t dangerous, just mildly….unnerving. He had an aura about him that, no matter how much he said to you, he always knew just a bit more than you. It was irritating and, unfortunately, true.
That was his job, after all. Find out what the man knew and pass it along.
And the best way for that was through the man’s fiancée. He had been setting this up for the last year. She was slowly starting to give. Finally. She was Gast’s assistant, had worked with his own father, and was engaged to Hojo.
It was always amazing how much information was passed along in bed.
Now it was just a matter of seeing how long it would take.
///
The plan had worked except for a few minor errors.
She wasn’t supposed to have gotten pregnant.
It wasn’t clear if the child was his or Hojo’s, and he should have known to not endanger the mission just for a detail like this, but he couldn’t help it. If it was his child….
He couldn’t just let Hojo do those…experiments on a helpless baby. One that wasn’t even born yet. That would have been far more inhuman than even he was capable of. Something Hojo was all too good at, however. That much was made obvious when the man had shot him.
That was when everything had fallen apart. While he had been unconscious, they had found something that had tipped them off, and they had tore apart his rooms and the house until they had found what they needed to. More than enough to convict him of treason.
He knew personally how treason was dealt with.
But even that simple death was denied him.
“It’s been decided,” Hojo said, smiling, his wife standing behind him, belly just starting to round with the child she carried. “You won’t be executed, though that is the normal punishment for those who betray Shinra. It is treason, after all.”
He stared at him quietly, waiting for the point of this discussion.
“There are a few…experiments that we were planning to run. You will be doing us a great favor by participating in these experiments.”
A soft, pained sigh, the bullet hole still aching, where they had apparently left it alone unhealed just to torment him. “Don’t suppose that my saying no would get me the death sentence, would it?”
“Oh, of course not.”
“Didn’t expect as much. Especially from a man who would experiment on his own child.”
That same damn smile, that shit eating “I know more than ~you~u~” smile. What was Hojo up to now?
“We know very, very well that it’s just as likely that you’re the father of this child. Don’t even try to hide it. After all, why would my dear wife lie to me, hmm? She told me everything that you two did together, just like a good wife. Obedient to her husband and truthful. I’m the one who told her to keep it up, to let you think that you had won. Tell me, how else do you think you were able to learn so much?”
He moved closer. “No, there is no escape for you, I’m afraid. Now all we want is the name of your conspirators. That’s all.” Hojo smiled that same, knowing smile the entire time he spoke, and as he reached for a scalpel. It didn’t escape anyone’s attention when Lucrecia slipped out of the room.
“Now that we’re alone,” Hojo said softly, moving the blade to rest on the skin near where Vincent had been shot. “Why don’t we start? Feel free to tell me everything that you feel I might want to know. Oh, and thank you. Now I’ll be able to see what the scientists in Wutai will be able to do based off my notes. It will be interesting, as they don’t have the Jenova that is needed for the theories to work. I wonder how many children they’ll kill before they realize that?”
The blade bit into skin. “Now, just need to remove that annoying bullet and we’ll be able to start. Do try not to scream. Loud noises are so bothersome.”
Vincent Valentine clamped his jaw tightly shut. He would not break now, not now and not to this man.
His mother was of Wutai, and her family would help keep their home safe.
For that, he was willing to die.
