Loss

He knows that his Turks are pleased with this situation.

It’s odd, really, the looks of relief they had tried to hide when he had told them of his idea originally. Tried to hide, though not terribly well. He had known Tseng for what had seemed like forever, and the others had been with him for so long that he could read them easily. Even Elena.

Of course, the opposite was also true. They read him as easily as he read them, and that may have been what had helped them relax.

Though they had each come up to him and asked if he was sure. After all, Valentine, Highwind, and Strife were well known for not taking well to manipulation.

But.... Rufus did have to admit, even to himself, that it felt good. He was goal driven. He always had been. Set up to take over the largest company in the world one day, he found himself with a much smaller power base than he had been trained to use, though he was building it up once more. Just because the Shin-Ra Company in Midgar had collapsed, it did not mean that the entire company was gone. Nor would it be until Rufus died. Even then, he hoped to have an heir to take it over.

That, however, wasn’t enough. He had felt somewhat lost. Health in ruins, trying to recover from both the damage done when the WEAPON had destroyed the tower with him in it, and with what Geostigma had done from the inside out, he found himself at a loss. Shin-Ra would recover, even without his help. Large chunks had been taken over by the NWO, and he actually trusted Reeve to do a good job with the supplies he now had.

Rufus, though, was goal driven, and without a goal, he felt lost.

Now, with the situation he found himself in, somehow sharing his bed with three other men, one of whom understood what the echos of Geostigma felt like, others who understood about starting over....

Well, he felt somewhat less lost, though he would never admit it to anyone but himself.

Even if he was sure his Turks knew it already.

Cold

The water was cold.

That was the first thing that really registered, and Cloud found himself pausing. It was cold water, and he was sure that Aeris would really not appreciate it. He could hear her yelling at him in the back of his head, telling him that she’d get sick if he put her in all that water.

But...that wasn’t right.

She was limp in his arms, and he cursed at the enhancements he had fought so hard to get. Now he could feel her cooling down, the illusion of sleep broken as he could -feel- the heat leech from her skin into the air. He wanted to wrap her up in a blanket in front of fireplace and make sure she had something hot to drink.

Not that it would do any good.

He had done this. In a way. He had tried to do it himself, and then his failure to react had simply meant that Sephiroth had finished the job.

Cloud wondered if Sephiroth ever felt cold.

He knew he did.

Moving through the water, he clung a little tighter to her. She was going cold, and he wanted to hold her tight for just a little longer.

He was good at pretending. Better than you think, whispered a voice.

He could pretend she wasn’t dead. Just for a little longer.

Pet

The outside was big. Very, very big, and full of lots of different things. Very distracting different things.

There were neat smells, and all sorts of tasty things. He didn’t realize that the small squeaks in the labs were so tasty, or he would have eaten them there. Which would have gotten him yelled at by stupidhuman, he was sure.

Nose catching a good scent, he slowly meandered his way towards it. It was sorta going the same direction as the voicecall he heard, so he could do both. Follow the voice and see what the good smell was.

There was someone there, and they were cooking something. That was the good smell. The scent from the person wasn’t quite right. Smelled human, but not. Human-thing?

Mrowling, he moved right over to human-thing and demanded part of whatever the good smell was. He surprised the human-thing, who jolted some at his appearance. That was right, human-thing, give food and be in awe.

Then he got his own surprise.

“Human-thing? That’s a new one. Hey there, cat. I’m Zack. Don’t worry, I’ll share, but I’m kinda curious how I can understand you, or if I really am just hallucinating.”

Looking up at the black furred human-thing, who had brightshiny flower eyes, he let out a surprised sound. Human-thing understood him?

Well, that did make things easier. As human-thing chuckled and reached out to give him a scratch, he decided that he was going to keep it. Human-thing was giving oh so good scratches with pointy claw times, and he understood what he was told.

A good type of pet to have.
