Flashbacks
Some things never go away.
Cid hates it when he wakes up a night to feel one or both of the other blonds stiffen in bed next to him, not because they are being molested by one of their other lovers, but because the Geostigma that had marred each of them forces them to.
The Geostigma itself is gone, but the memory of it is still there, still etched into their bodies. It doesn’t seem bad, the skin that used to be black turning red and blotchy, but it must have -hurt-, because Cid can’t see any other reason for Cloud to make that sound except in pain, even if he was still asleep. Rufus makes a similar one, his breathing always going odd for just a moment. Cid still thinks the other man is an obnoxious prick most of the time, but Cid, for his all his gruffness, is a good man at heart, and wishes nobody pain. Except Sephiroth. And occasionally Rufus. But not like this.
Then as fast as it starts, it stops. Tense bodies will relax, and when Cloud curls tighter against Vincent, he doesn’t make a sound other than a small sigh of relief. It makes Cid’s stomach go tight. It’s hard to imagine anything making Cloud hurt like that, and it pisses Cid off. Hadn’t Cloud done enough for the planet? Why couldn’t he get a break?
Questions he knew would never be answer. So he and Vincent just do what they can to soothe the other two when the times get bad, and curse them out if either attempt to say thank you. Not that either did it in any way, shape, or form that actually resembled a thank you, but the four of them had their own language. Most of it involved cursing in some form or another.
Still, it hurt to see the others hurt, and Cid wondered just how long this arrangement was going to last before they lost someone.
Then he shoved the thought from his mind and went back to snarking with Rufus because the other man just pissed him off.
