Zack Does Not
Zack does not do slow.
Not if he can help it, anyway.
Everything about Zack is built for speed. His heart beats at a slightly faster than human average. His reactions, the way he tracks, the way he moves. All of it faster than most humans. Faster than a lot of demons as well.
Zack does not do slow.
Slow is what gets people killed. Oh, he admits, sometimes being too fast will do it as well, but being quick saved him more often than not. Being just a little faster than the one chasing him, or throwing magic his way. Just enough to keep from getting caught or getting killed.
Zack does not do slow.
Slow is for old people. And Cloud. There are some things Zack enjoys taking his time over. Like a good meal, or time spent with one or more of his lovers. Even then, to him, that’s not slow, that’s appreciating. Slow is letting things that should matter slip through his fingers and losing opportunities because he wasn’t quick enough to snatch them up.
Zack does not do slow.
Zack lives his life as if it’s a candle about to burn out. Because he never knows when he won’t be fast enough and things will end. And when that happens, he doesn’t want to be talked about as that person who didn’t take advantage of life while he had the chance.
Zack does not do slow.
He doubts his death will be any different.

Why?
Some days, Cid wonders what the hell has been mixed with his cigarettes, because it makes no sense what he’s doing.
Why would he get involved with the people he did? With Cloud, or Vincent, or, gods, Rufus Shinra? It made no sense at all. Not when he had Sherra at home.
Doesn’t help anything that she loves them to pieces and makes them food when she’s around them. Even Shinra. Which Cid liked because it seemed to confuse the man and anything that confuses Shinra is always good entertainment. Maybe that was why Cid bothered with the man after all.
Vincent pissed him off to no end, with his constant going on about sin and forgiveness. Cid had kissed him once just to watch him boggle. That had been damn funny, too. Pretty hot as well. Who knew the man could actually kiss that good. After he got over the whole staring at Cid like he had grown a new limb. That was Vincent’s department, anyway.
Cloud…. Hells, Cloud was a big puppy who was always expecting to be kicked. Even when he hid it, Cid could see it in the man’s attitude when he thought nobody was looking. He had the sneaking suspicion that was why Cloud never tried for Tifa or anyone else until he had ended up with them. The kid had had a shitty life, and Cid had already decided next person who hurt him was going to have a meeting with the pointy end of Venus Gospel. Not that he’d tell him that. Just like Vincent, no reason to encourage the moping.
He didn’t know why he put up with them. He really didn’t. But he knew that if something happened to them, if anything hurt them, he’d have to apply sheer amounts of pain.
Then he’d let the rest of the crew he grudgingly called family, if only in his head, have a go at whoever hurt his lovers.
What else did he have them for?

Life
Things were coming to a head.
It had reached the point that it was a simple, simple choice.
Live or die.
The voice in his head was loud, and he wanted to follow so badly. One reason for escape right there. Another was stupidhuman’s ignoring. It was not hard at all to realize that projects stupidhuman stopped paying attention to went away. And he didn’t think it was a good away. Like the ones who had made stupidhuman mad and growling. That was a good away. Stupidhuman’s group made things go away in ways that were stillness and cold.
He did not want to be like that.
Time was running out. Only one way to go.
Out.
It took patience and study. He had to be careful to not let stupidhuman catch him watching, or he might realize what he had been doing. Not going to be kept here, not when he could get out and follow the call.
Then, one day, the timing was perfect. The door to the place outside the room was open, and the one who was feeding him was opening the cage.
It felt good to use that one’s face as a jumping point, claws digging in hard and fast. Thankfully the blood didn’t give them a trail to follow once outside the room, and he was going fast.
Fewer things were harder to catch than a cat who didn’t want to be caught.
It took what seemed like forever, but he followed his nose and the words of the stupidhuman’s group.
He had never been outside before.
It was a lot bigger than he had thought.
Free, and a bit stunned, he followed the voice.
Maybe now he would know what life was really like.
