I always chalked Cloud's near-flying in AC up tp the statement I once heard concerning him - he doesn't need materia anymore.

By that, I have a theory that Cloud is the nearest thing in the world now to a Cetra, in that he can draw magic directly from the planet without needing to use materia as an intermediary.

Actually, I also think a lot of limit breaks do that anyway, but it'd have to be a point that it'd only happen when a person is really stressed because the planet wouldn't give up that energy willingly.
