([personal profile] icedark_elf Apr. 28th, 2007 03:13 pm)
And the second of the requested ficlets are done. First request from [livejournal.com profile] forgottenlover, at 426 words is:

Wyvernset Cid and Cloud

All his life, Cid had wanted to fly.

When he was a kid, he had watched birds, watched bats, watched bugs, watched wyverns. He watched anything that could fly, and, in the back of his mind, he wished he could do the same. Spread wings and take to the air.

When he got a little older, he packed up and found himself a place right in the heart of the wyvern riders and their bonded. He hoped, year after year, that this year would be the one that he got picked, that he would find himself being spoke to by one of the new hatchlings, or one of the older ones who had never selected.

As he got even older, he still hoped, but he started to accept that, maybe, it wasn’t in his cards. Didn’t stop the dreams of flying, of feeling the wind whipping past him as they soared through the sky.

At the age of thirty, he decided he was too old. Nobody got picked when they were that old, and he accepted it, feeling old bitterness fresh again.

He left, unable to sit there as those who got his dream took to the skies.

Two years passed after that, as he roamed and worked, settling into the life of a tinker. He fixed machines and sharpened blades. He became a jack of all trades, a person who could be counted on to have enough oddball skill to get the job done.

He didn’t expect to wake up one morning and find a wyvern curled up around his fire.

It was a beautiful creature, all sleek gold feather and scales, some just tipped with blue. The same blue as its eyes.

He looked around for its rider, sure that there must be one somewhere around. Probably hurt, though the wyvern didn’t seem to act like it.

You should be packing up. It’s a long flight back to the nesting areas.

He stared at it. “What the hell?”

He could have swore that the creature, male by the voice, smiled at him as it-he, tilted his great head and rumbled softly at him.

My name is Cloud. And I decided that you are my rider. You might want to hurry, or I’ll end up flying you through that rainburst anyway. He tilted his head the other way. Might do it anyway. Get the smell of that nasty smoke off of you.

Okay, maybe dreams did come true. But why the hell did he get the sarcastic one?

Because like calls to like Cid. That's why you got the sarcastic one. *grins*

From: [identity profile] icedark-elf.livejournal.com

Oh, like so calls to like. Though most of the wyvern/rider sets are a bit more opposite. At least superficially. Or maybe not so opposite after all.

From: [identity profile] artimusdin.livejournal.com

Well, Cloud isn't near as outgoing as Cid is. *grins* Outgoing-and-sarcastic!Cid and quiet-but-sarcastic!Cloud FTW?

From: [identity profile] yuenoclow.livejournal.com

*is amused* Cid, I'm sure you're not the only one with a sarcastic wyvern. Though now I'm wondering if Zack is a rider or a wyvern in this 'verse, 'cause then I'd know who to feel sorry for, his wyvern or his rider...

From: [identity profile] kemis.livejournal.com

Okay, maybe dreams did come true. But why the hell did he get the sarcastic one?

Because you're not that lucky, Cid. *pats*

Whee, so cool. *snuggles* There's more of this coming, right? Right?

From: [identity profile] salmastryon.livejournal.com

hehe

My mom is now wanting to know what I'm chuckling over. :P

From: [identity profile] icedark-elf.livejournal.com

Zack, Seph, Aeris, and Vincent have all be set up. [livejournal.com profile] forgottenlover and I are using this verse for part of our Writing Together prompts, and we were amused at how it keeps fitting together.

From: [identity profile] icedark-elf.livejournal.com

*grins* As soon as I get off my lazy ass and transcribe it. We've already rped it out.

*glees* wyvern!Cloud and rider!Cid, this seems almost like a cracktastic version of The Dragonriders of Pern. Only the wyverns are much more intelligent, which is awesome. Yes. Two little questions: is this 'verse going to have a title? And are the wyverns configured more like birds or like archaeopteryx(using the wing/forearm as legs to walk on)?

From: [identity profile] icedark-elf.livejournal.com

Kinda, kinda not. We came up with most of it on our own. Yeah, the wyverns are pretty damn smart. At the moment, no title, though we have more ficcy planned, and they have claws on the arch of the wing so that they could walk on it. Four limbed instead of six, and while they can walk on just the hindlegs, it's uncomfortable and they are designed for all fours.

From: [identity profile] forgottenlover.livejournal.com

We haven't gotten around to titling it, and think more serpentine. They have hands at the juncture of their wings, but it's only for fine manipulationa nd most 'walking' is on their legs, which is only the one set ::nods::

::gets out of your other comments:: mwaha!

I already told you I liked how this came out buuuuut ::glomps anyway::

Where did the idea come from?

That's probably a good thing, poor Cloud would probably look a bit to much like a Cockatrice otherwise.

Btw, I was squeeing at the fact that there are dragons at all, no matter the breed. Because dragons do not get enough love.

From: [identity profile] forgottenlover.livejournal.com

Ohhh, go over to [livejournal.com profile] untypical_two and look at our header phrase.

We bunnied ourselves on accident with that thing, and this universe was born. ::needs to poke at one of her backstories in this verse at some point::

But we decided we liked serpentines and feathers and intelligence so... here we are.

Here Be Dragons? XDD *loves* Will any other stories in this 'verse be posted over there?

Will there be any other kinds of dragons in this universe? Like amphiteres or something?

From: [identity profile] forgottenlover.livejournal.com

I know for sure one'll end up over there, since that's where this verse started for.

Amphiteres? What kinds of dragon are those? I think we just have our Wyverns and assorted FF7esque creatures though, either way.

humm... *watches*

Hah XDDD you shouldn't have asked a dragon freak. The traditional version of a amphitere is a serpent with wings (a mix between webbed and feathered) that are fairly good natured with two tongues, one forked and the other shaped like an arrow tip. Some people classify dragons/gods such as Quetzaquatl as amphiteres under the basis that (he for instance) is a feathered serpent. Which is pretty stupid because then he'd be closer to a wyrm then an amphitere.

As a general rule of thumb dragons can be classified by their number of limbs or types of abilities.

Traditional western dragon: four legs and two wings
Wyvern: Two legged, two winged
Drake: four legged
Amphitere: winged + feathered(semi optional)
Wyrm/Wurm: No limbs
Gargouille: finned and spurts water (what gargoyles came from)
Hydra: multi-headed sea serpent
Guiver: serpent, breaths disease
Lindorm: two legged
Basilisk: serpent with rooster's comb and crown (TWO feet long, not fifty damnit) with killer eyes
Cockatrice: A fusion of rooster and snake w/killer eyes, appearances vary.
Salamander: small and drake-like (four legged) with 11 stars on it's back, spits poison.

Those listed are only some of the european dragons, ignoring all other continents and several specialized singularly occurring dragons and neo-dragons.

Of course that can all be ignored because that only the historical. Because dragons are such iconic figures and people have a lot of imagination- well, there are a lot of modern dragons.

*blinks* erm, sorry to have ranted at you; but you got me started in on dragons so *shrugs* Any other questions? XD

There can never be enough beastie-FF7! ::pounce-squeeze::

And grumpy Cid finally gets to fly! ^__^

From: [identity profile] forgottenlover.livejournal.com

::laughs:: oh no, that was fine, I did ask. I'm not very well brushed up on my dragon lore really, so it's good to know of some more that I didn't initially ::nods::

Lol, I love how Cid's trying to pretend he's not squeeing like a six year old in his mind, right now.

And while I know everyone mentioned it... Sarcastic Wyvern!Cloud roxorz my boxorz. *grin*
