Summary: Something is wrong.

A/N: Everything Changes is what I named the blinded Zack universe. It was supposed to be over. Then someone said happy ending and the muses went "Whoops, this is FFVII, that ain't allowed." Then they stabbed my brain with this.

Boo, muses.

Leather

It was the leather he smelled first.

Leather wasn’t that common down here. Lots of people liked the lighter fabrics, especially this time of year, when it was hot and a bit muggy, even with the breezes that flowed this close to the sea. The sudden shift in the wind had been what had brought the scent to him.

Ever since he had lost his sight months ago, Zack had been managing to make his other senses work better and better. They were even better than when they had been enhanced to the levels of a 1st Class SOLDIER. Better than when he and Cloud had first escaped from the labs, and he realized how vivid and more there everything was, and he had spent a long moment wondering just what Hojo had done to him, had done to Cloud, and then there hadn’t been time to think about it anymore. All that had mattered after that was escape, escape, escape. They had spent so long running that Zack had wondered if it was going to stop.

Now, though, without his eyes, everything else seemed more…intense. He could smell things, like the scent of Aeris’s hair on Cloud’s shoulder from where Aeris had used him for a pillow, and that was after Cloud had spent all day in the barn. Or he was able to open his mouth in the place where the greens were stored and breathe in, and taste which greens were where. Sometimes the amount of sensory input he got was insane, but he was able to learn to deal with it and use it in everyday life.

He had been out with Noisy, mostly just walking the outer fields. Some days he just had to get away from the other two. Zack loved them both to pieces, but, really, sometimes they did something that smacked of smothering to him and he just had to get out. They didn’t mean it, but Zack did have to face facts. His lovers loved him. They would want to protect him, blind or not, in anyway they could. He would do the same. But…. Being blind made him sensitive to some things that he had never been able notice before. Like he could almost see the new things. No, not so much see, but taste. A…flickering of overtones around people that he could almost taste. Not real taste, but a taste that was of different things.

Like how Aeris tasted like honey and sea air when she was happy and close to him. Cloud tasted like scent of steel and cold, and over it all was a faint bitter. They weren’t real smells or tastes, they were just…there. And they changed when the person was feeling strongly something or another. It was just…odd, and he didn’t want to ask the others because he knew it would set off more hovering.

It hadn’t been like that before the lab. What had Hojo done to him?

So he had been walking, and the wind had changed, and he had smelled it. The smell of leather, fresh and sharp. And with it was the almost musk of feathers, almost as an afterthought. With it, in that scent vision of his, was feathers and leather again, with the same low bitterness of Cloud, only more there. It was everywhere in that scentsight.

A familiar scent, too.

Impossible.

Noisy made a low sound and Zack felt her take a step around him, moving to stay between him and the one who was moving now. Zack could hear the creak of the leather, the brush of the coat against pants, the soft sound of boots on grass. With a low, sharp click, he called Noisy back to his side, and he caught the sound of steel being slide back into place.

“Wise choice, Zachary. I’ve seen how fond you are of the bird. I did not wish to kill her if not necessary.”

It couldn’t be, but it was.

“Sephiroth.”

He could hear the smug smile in Seph’s voice. “Nice to see you haven’t forgotten me totally. Even living in the lap of everything you apparently ever wanted. So shameful, Zack. What happened to your ambition, what happened to the desire to be more? The urge that made you the youngest SOLDIER to reach 1st Class. Seems that you’ve lost it.”

Then, suddenly, Seph was right there. Close enough that Zack could feel the heat pour off his body, the tickle of hair against his face, his senses overwhelmed by the sheer amount of Sephiroth for a moment. “Or maybe,” he purred, and Zack could feel the vibration shiver through him. “Maybe you’ve just directed it into new things.”

“What are you doing here?” Zack rasped, still in shock and unsure of what was going on. Seph was dead. He had seen him go into the reserve at the Mako reactor. Cloud had flung him in. So how was he here now?

“I called you traitor once, didn’t I?” The question was still in that low purring sound, and fingers traced his cheek. Zack turned his head away from the touch.

“You called me traitor, you burned the town, and you killed the people. There was a lot you did, Seph.”

His chin was suddenly caught in a painfully tight grip, and Zack had to fight the urge to squirm. “None of them matter.” He could almost feel the eyes that he knew were focused on him with what was most likely lethal intent. “Mother says that all of you are liars, but I know she’s wrong. At least about you.”

Sephiroth was almost crooning, and Zack couldn’t help a shiver. “I’ll prove to her that you aren’t a traitor. I didn’t mean to hurt you in the reactor. You’re mine, I wouldn’t hurt what was mine. But you were yelling at me, Zack. Shouldn’t yell at me. But I want you to come with me, Zack. I don’t like being alone with Mother. I’ve told her that you won’t hurt me. Especially now.”

Fingertips traced just under his eyes, and then the hand holding his chin suddenly moved and closed on his throat. Zack choked, his own hands coming up to try to fight off the suddenly too tight grip cutting off his air.

“It’ll be all right, Zack. Just calm down. We’ll go away, and then we can prove to Mother that you can be trusted, and you can stay with me. As long as you don’t betray me again.” The fingers tightened, as Zack felt dizzy. “Don’t betray me again, Zack, I didn’t like it the first time, and I will make sure there wasn’t a third time.”

Zack felt his feet leave the ground, and he heard Noisy make a warking sound. With a last bit of effort, he gave the whistle to flee, and he heard the thud of feet charging off. Good. She shouldn’t die….

Everything started to fade out, and the last thing Zack heard was Seph whispering. “You are mine, Zack, and nobody else gets to keep you…..”

Then the scent of leather and everything else faded, and Zack knew nothing else.

*face-palm* Sorry! I didn't mean to fuel the evil muses! But, oh shit... this isn't good. And things were going so *well* too... gah.

Noooooooooooo!

XO Aw, and you wrote it so well! That's why it hurts so much more.

I was gonna write some silly drabble about his little chickobos, too, but you ain't gettin' it now! XP

*flails* How did I miss the ones all the middle fics? I didn't even get to apprciate the warm fuzzy woobie happy before the doom happened. (I admit I was kinda hoping for a happily ever after not-insane Sephiroth there ^_~)

But it was very good. Love the chickabos, and Zack's guide Chocobo. Love Aeris and her pies.

He was happy and hurt, but he just radiated the same feel she got from chocobos that were allowed to really run.

Freedom. Wild and joyous freedom.
describing Zack.

That was just a brilliant line ^_^

You have an 'all your base' moment in the middle of this: What happen to your ambition, what happen to the desire to be more?

Aside from that... oh, ouch. But FF7 or no FF7, there will be an ending where, at least, they don't all end up dead, right? Right???
