Healing
He hated being sick. Hated it, hated it, hated it.
According to Rukia and Renji, every Soul Reaper went through this. Renji had been particularly amazed that Ichigo had managed to put it off for this long, though he hadn’t been surprised at how sick his lover had become. Apparently Ichigo had caught the Soul Society version of chicken pox. Only how sick someone got was in direct proportion with how strong they were.
Rukia had quietly told Ichigo that they had almost lost him. And that they were lucky he was as stubborn as he was strong.
Ichigo didn’t remember much of it. He remember being cold, then hot, then cold again. He remembered strong fingers wrapped around his hands. He remembered the faint mummers that seemed so far away, and warm bodies that had lent him heat at the coldest moments.
Now, though, now he was in the agitated part of being sick. His fever had broken and he was restless, but still not well enough to get out of bed. At least if you listened to the death threats by his lovers.
“Ichigo?”
“Hey,” he responded as Rukia poked her head in the door. She smiled at him, then bumped the door open the rest of the way with her hip. She came into the room fully, arms full of a food tray. Ichigo’s stomach crumbled as he saw that it was covered in many of his favorite treats, the healthiest ones. Right behind her was Renji, who had several small boxes in his arms.
“Hanatarou told us that it would be good for you to eat, and he sat down and helped us pick out some things that wouldn’t kill you.” Rukia said as she and Renji settled themselves on the bed.
“And, to keep us from killing your ourself after you drive us mad, we picked up a few things to keep you busy,” Renji continued as he sorted through the boxes he carried. “Would look bad if we had to kill you after hearing “I’m bored” for the nine hundredth time.”
“Ch,” Ichigo snorted, “like you could take me down.”
Renji twitched, and Ichigo just knew the other man was going to pounce him, but was stopped by a soft cough from Rukia. “We have explicit instructions to not do anything too strenuous for the next week or so, just to make sure you don’t relapse. Plus, if I have to clean juice out of the bed, I will hurt someone.” She glared at both the men, who meekly relaxed against the bed.
“Better.” She handed Ichigo a bowl of soup, which he immediately began to eat. As he did, Renji pulled out a booklet, the type that comes with games.
“Okay, I think this is called ‘chess’, and we are going to learn it. It’s supposed to help teach strategy and is complicated. That should keep you entertained for a few day,” the redhead said. After clearing his throat, Renji began to read the booklet.
Ichigo had always hated being sick. He still didn’t like it, but at least he was entertained this time. Especially when Rukia and Renji began to squabble about what the instructions meant.
