"I didn't know you folded paper."
It was the first thing Mr. Elric has said to me since he sat down.
"Origami is an ancient tradition in my culture," I told him as I smoothed down another crease. A circus has started to form around me. "I find that the folding helps soothe frazzled nerves." Within a few more folds, I'm done and I hand him a bat. "The bat means good luck in my world. I take it you have something similar here."
He nodded, eyes focused on the bat he holds. Then he set it to the side and pulled a piece of paper off the pile that sits between us.
A small clap and he puts his hands on the sheet. I feel myself tense as blue light spilled from his fingers and crackled over the paper. I have seen others do the strange science they call alchemy, but this is the first time I've seen Mr. Elric perform it.
When the light died, he placed a dragon in my hands. "Here we use a dragon for luck." He smiles slightly. "And as a promise." He stood. "I will find a way for you to return, I promise." He walked away, and I stare at the dragon for a moment.
Mr. Elric is a strange one at times, but he keeps his promises. That is something I have learned well.
The dragon joins the rest of the circus.
Gah. So many ideas. Someone make them go away.
