Am happy, happy. Had a friend give me the complete Saiyuki manga series, plus Gaiden, on a CD for my birthday. Plus another friend gave me discs 3 and 4 from the series for another present. Not to mention I got part of a story done, which is right here.

Dragon AU

“Aren’t they beautiful?”

The sheer ‘motherness’ of the tone made Konzen Doji smirk as he stepped into the room. For a moment, he didn’t see what his sister was speaking of; since he was far too busy trying to keep his balance. The entire room was covered in a thick layer of pillows and padded blankets. Finally, though, he was able to see the prizes of the room.

Swaddled in center, cradled by a huge number of pillows, was a set of eggs. The faint magic lights that filled the room glistened off the shells, and Konzen turned towards his sister. “May I?”

Rasetsunyo nodded. “Of course. They will be your nephew and niece. It will be nice for them to get to know you now.”

With that permission, Konzen waded through the coverings to reach the eggs. Long fingers lightly touched the smooth hardness of the shells, and he could feel life vibrating inside the protective covering. Inside the shimmering red was his nephew, and in the green one was his niece. Just by touching them, Konzen could tell that the boy was a few days older, and would most likely lord that over his little sister.

Straightening, Konzen began to move back towards his baby sister. “They are beautiful. Both of them will be metallics, that’s obvious enough with all that sheen on the shells. Like their father.”

Just the slight mention of her children’s father made Rasetsunyo frown. “I’d wish you would not mention him, Konzen.” Her violet eyes narrowed in anger. “I do not acknowledge that… that… thing in any way. Not after what he did. Not after the pain he has caused.”

‘Pain he has caused.’ To Konzen, that was putting things lightly. Ever since his sister’s mate, Gyumaoh, had taken up with that blue-haired demon, things had begun to go wrong. Small treacheries had been hard enough, but at last the great dragon had gone too far.

Half a moon ago, Gyumaoh had taken demon scum and sent them after dragon eggs, destroying most of them. Such a crime had sent all of the dragons, even those who had formally been allied with Gyumaoh, into a fit of fury. To slay a child, especially a dragon in egg, was one of the most horrible of crimes. Dragons did not breed often or many. Even Rasetsunyo’s clutch of two was an amazing number.

And with him mad enough to slay the offspring of others; it was no wonder Rasetsunyo had abandoned him, fleeing to the home of her closest relative. If it hadn’t been for the fact she was heavy with egg, Konzen was sure she would have gone for their aunt, even was even farther away. But the need to lay was strong, and she had shown up at his doorstep, not even bothering to changed to a two-legged form before she took over a wing of his castle.
But as he looked at the eggs, Konzen felt a mixture of emotions. Pride of his sister’s eggs was foremost. They were truly well formed, with smooth shells and actually glowing with life. Exactly how a dragon’s egg should be. However, he was also worried. Gyumaoh would not take the loss of his children well. He would want them back, and even if his mistress tried to dissuade him from doing so, the great dragon would come for them.

As if his thoughts had summoned danger, the wards Konzen had placed around the house went off. The hair of his human form stood on end, and he snarled, eyes unfocusing as he mentally searched out the intruders.

He felt his jaw drop.

“Come on,” he growled, grabbing his sister’s arm and yanking her towards the eggs. Managing to snag one of the larger blankets, he let go of Rasetsunyo and spread the quilt out. “I don’t know how he did it, but there is an army of demons coming this way.”

“What?”

Konzen didn’t answer as he threw some pillows onto the cloth, creating a makeshift nest. “Pass me the children,” he ordered, holding out his hands.

Rasetsunyo looked at him in horror. “You can’t mean to….” He knew exactly why she was so frightened. To do this with fresh laid eggs was dangerous to the unborn dragons. The shock of the movement could easily cause defects and death before they even had a chance to hatch.

“I do.” Konzen turned the full force of his extra millennia onto his sister. “If we leave them here, Gyumaoh will take them. And how long do you think they will last with that demon bitch about. Even if she doesn’t hurt them, they will be warped by the same madness that has twisted your former mate. Now, help me.”

Still moving as if stunned, Rasetsunyo carefully lifted first the red shell holding the boy. After making sure Konzen had a secure grip, she gently did the same to the bronze holding her daughter.

“Konzen?”

Something in that tone made the blond man stop and look up.

“Take care of my babies. My Kougaiji and Lirin.”

‘She couldn’t mean to’ was all Konzen had time to think of before Rasetsunyo shifted into all the glory a black crystal dragon could muster. With a scream of challenge, she flew from the laying chamber, and Konzen could hear the first casualties to her deadly assault on the invaders.

“Damn it,” hissed Konzen. But if was far too late for him to protest. If he joined her in the battle outside, there was a very good chance that the eggs would be lost. And she would never be able to forgive him if that happened. Nor would he be able to forgive himself.

There was only one place to go. To their aunt’s. To Kanzeon.

Changing to his natural form, Konzen wrapped the quilt carefully around the eggs, making sure they would stay warm in this desperate flight for freedom. Faintly, he could hear the screams of an angry dragon and the cries of her prey. Awkwardly moving for the exit, senses alert for danger, Konzen was grateful that he came across no demons. Apparently they were completely focused on Rasetsunyo.

As he came to a lesser used exit, Konzen paused. Looking towards the direction his sister would be flying in if he could see her, Konzen bowed his head. “Farewell, sister. And good luck. I will make sure that they are safe.”

And then the thin golden dragon spread feathered wings and launched himself into emptiness.
