Why they had been trying to move civilians without proper military support, Sephiroth could not even begin to guess. Nor did he care. All that mattered was that he was having to clean up for Shin-Ra.
Most of the scientists being moved out of the last facility in Wutai were dead already. But there was a group of Wutai fighters fleeing, and they were taking something that screamed, loudly, with them.
No, he was not going to let them take something to ransom back, or put to use in who knew what way.
Leaving the rest of his troop behind, he sped forward, blade out, and speeding after the cries.
Killing the pitiful group only took a few minutes, and he found the source of the screams. A tiny child-thing was looking up at him, gasping for breathe, tears on its face. Eyeing the blond creature, Sephiroth collected it by the back of its shirt. “Quiet,” he ordered, trying to listen to see if there were any more fighters alive.
The child thing went silent, though it twisted around to cling to his leg. Frowning faintly, Sephiroth shook his leg a bit, trying to make it let go. When it refused, he proceeded to ignore it, and walked back to where the slaughter had happened.
Maybe he could pass it off to one of the people there? They were part of the local villages that were on Shin-Ra’s side. They would be better able to deal with something this small.
Of course, that plan would have worked better if the child would let go.
After much hassle, he finally gave up, stalking back to camp with the child clinging to his arm. Ignoring it again, he walked to his tent before holding his arm out over the bed. “Release,” he ordered, content that, this time, the child listened.
“Your name?”
Large blue eyes blinked at him for a moment before the boy looked at the ground. “Cloud Strife,” it said finally, voice as small as the rest of it.
Sephiroth would have to arm the child. If it wouldn’t go away, he would try to make sure it didn’t die.

It didn’t hit until they had finished eating, and the nice Mr. Hendriks had talked to him, but Cloud suddenly realized what he was telling people.
His parents were dead. Momma and Daddy weren’t ever coming back.
He was only six, but he knew what dead was. They had worked in the labs, and they poked at dead things sometimes. It had taken a while to get that dead meant not coming back.
And now they were dead.
“It’s not fair,” he said finally.
“It’s war. And life.” Sephiroth said back.
They had said Sephiroth was the best thing from Shin-Ra, and he should try to be like him. Which was why he had clung instead of letting go before.
“Why did they do that? We didn’t do nothing to them.”
Sephiroth simply shrugged. “We’re the enemy.”
Cloud scowled back. “They’re pooheads.”
That got a strangled sound from Sephiroth, and Cloud would have tried to figure out what made him do that, but it suddenly hit him.
They were never-never coming back. No more hugs or kisses or bedtime stories.
Sephiroth made another sound when Cloud started to cry on him, hand patting his head.
Cloud wanted his parents back.

They got new troops in on a regular basis, and Hayes always watched them to see how they reacted to camp.
The last few bunches, though, got to have a bit of a surprise when they got here.
Sephiroth wasn’t known for being a nice person. He was snippy at times, had little patience for fools, and a temper that the others tried to avoid raising. All of that had spread through the rumor circuit. Even the greenies knew not to mess with Sephiroth.
Right now, though, he could see as the new SOLDIERs tried to reconcile what they had been told about Sephiroth with what they were seeing in front of them.
As the general moved around them, still shorter than most of the troops, but striking in his black leather and long silver hair, it wasn’t his unusual appearance that was getting the most stares.
It was the tiny blond boy that was trotting after him, hand closed around the end of that flag of silver hair.

Lots of times, Wutai was just icky. It rained a lot, and there was always smoke and stuff in the air. Cloud didn’t remember anyplace that -hadn’t- been Wutai, but he had spent a lot of time in his parents’ lab. There it was always clean, and the air smelled really sharp with all the chemicals they had. He had always had to be really careful to not knock anything over, or they would have to leave him at home. And home was boring.
But here, there was always thing to do, and Sephiroth always found the -neatest- things around camp to show Cloud. And they had started his weapons training, and there was all sorts of new things to learn.
So it wasn’t boring real often, but, still, it was wet and sticky, and Cloud actually didn’t fight taking a shower when Sephiroth took him there.
But this was nice.
Sitting on a box, he tipped his head back, enjoying the moment.
Sunlight, warm, bright sunlight didn’t happen that often.

It was getting a smile from everyone. Even the most hard hearted of the SOLDIERs and troops couldn’t help but smile at the sight before them.
Wutai was nearing the end of its rainy season, but that didn’t seem to slow down the rain one little bit. Everyone was sick of it.
Usually.
Right now, though, it seemed as if their little mascot of blond fluff had decided to enjoy the last of the storms. He was out there right now, watching by a drenched Sephiroth, who also seemed to be smiling faintly.
Though the ones who saw it were sure they were hallucinating.
Most of them were paying attention to the little one anyway.
He was laughing, high and light, jumping from puddle to puddle, splashing around in some dance that only kids knew.
The rain was irritating and seemed to go on forever.
Didn’t stop any of them from enjoying this, though.
