Title: Freedom
Author: GW Katrina aka [insanejournal.com profile] icedark_elf
Series: Outlaw Star
Pairing: Gene/Jim
Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: Not mine.

When they had first gotten together, Sazuka had smiled, Melfina had looked a bit hurt, Gillian had muttered about humans and Aisha had smirked and said it was only a matter of time. Now, Sazuka still smiled, Melfina had taken to mothering both, Gillian still muttered about humans, and Aisha wanted to know why they didn’t have any kits, adopted or otherwise.

Strangely enough, their lives hadn’t really changed that much. Gene was still the cocky, selfsure bastard he had always been, and even flirted outrageously with all the girls. Jim still yelled at Gene whenever the redhead wanted to go out and spend the money they needed to fix the Outlaw Star, and seemed to be the more mature one of the two.

But now, even when Gene flirted, it was Jim’s bed he shared. And when Jim yelled, he looked more amused than angry.

The blond had grown up into a young man who had more than one person sniffing after him, but his heart had always been set on Gene. And Gene, still lean and attractive in his own way, didn’t tolerate anyone the way he did Jim. As cheesy as it sounded, they were it for each other. No one got between them.

But it made it that much harder for Jim when he sat next to Gene’s bed after yet another job gone bad, and the redhead was hurt enough to not argue about bed rest. And Gene always looked a bit more frustrated at everything when he came across Jim slumped over in front of the computer, trying to figure out how to keep the company in the black.

For every down, though, there were twice as much time up. Both men enjoyed the time they spent in the Outlaw Star, where they were free of even the smallest of social expectations. That freedom gave them the chance to relax and enjoy their lives. All of it. Crazy girls and noisy computers and each other.

The Outlaw Star was their freedom in more ways than one.

Woot! Still keeping up.
