They have images to uphold. He is Malfoy, and they are his people. He is expected to take a wife and pass along the family name. They are as well, but it isn’t as urgent for them. Both have brothers, while Draco is the only child.
In public, they are Crabbe and Goyle. They are there to keep people from touching Malfoy if he doesn’t want them to. They are a unit, people rarely mentioning one of them separately. To most, they are not Crabbe and Goyle, but CrabbeandGoyle, and single being.
But when they are alone, the masks come off. Here, Draco emerges from Malfoy, and is eager to touch without having to worry about who is reporting each bit of contact. When they are alone, Crabbe becomes Vincent, and he finds joy in relaxing in the most unusual positions, draped on the couch like a cat. From the sloughed skin of Goyle comes a fidgeting Greg, who finds it fascinating to play with his lovers hair.
In private, or with those they trust, they stop becoming leader and minions, and simply become what they’ve always wanted to be.
