You know, I'm slowly going to toss all of my FFVII theories out here one day.
This one is on Cloud and flying.
While replaying the scene where Cloud gives Sephiroth the Black Materia, I was sitting there and going "You know, I wonder if Cloud is enough of a clone that he could fly as well. And what we saw there was just Sephiroth manipulating him to use that ability, rather than ignore it."
It would make a lot of sense. Especially given the jumps we see in Advent Children. Several times, he's more hovering in place than anything else, and that fall after taking out the summons should have shattered what he landed on, but not if he was unconsciously slowing his fall.
If that is the case, I don't think he would use it intentionally. Being able to fly would make him feel even less human and that much closer to Sephiroth. So any use would be completely subconscious, and he would most likely deny it if it was pointed out to him.
*pokes at the theory and ponders* Oh, could so make with the Cloud angst with this.
*goes back to poking at Pre-Black Materia Sephiroth and Post-Black Materia Sephiroth, who are so very, very different* Be kinda fun to figure out the differences in power and abilities.

I do think that there is the possibility of some trace Cetra, especially given most of the world probably has at least a few genetics from them, and my own personal theory that Jenova's body is an infected Cetra.
But, that's an interesting theory. Especially the limit break things. It explains a lot, though I'm always curious how they get them. Is it a subconscious manipulation of things? Cause like Meteorain, that could so be a modification of Comet. Beamblade could be something based off the non-type damage that some of the summons pull out.
*now pondering limit breaks* Ack, ack, what if the limit break is determined by the Cetra genetics you have? And every limitbreak is a combination of personality, magic, and genetics.
*headdesk* Yeah, I had the Cetra genetics dispersed in the human population before, but now Madamhydra really got it pulled to the surface. Poodoo.

So going on my theory of Cloud being a neo-cetra, he's kind-of a throwback - a human who has learnt how to listen to the planet again, at least moreso than most humans that exist, and thereby can access more of the planet's power (magic, in other words) than the average human.
It probably also helps that he's been practically soaked in mako a few times in his recent life though.

It goes along with my personal theory that Sephiroth himself ironically could have a high concentration of Cetra genes, otherwise he wouldn't have survived Hojo's prenatal and postnatal tinkering.

If you think about things statistically (i.e., genes being randomly distributed through the human population) it might seem weird that I have all the AVALANCHE crew basically having large portions of Cetra genes. But from another viewpoint, it makes sense that they would have those special genes because they (the genes) would explain their extraordinary abilities, and may also explain how they naturally gravitated together (like calling to like?)
But yes, it's a very plausible theory that the extraordinary abilities displayed by Cloud and his friends (pseudo-flying, limit breaks, etc.) could be explained by subconscious manipulation of various forms of energy, in large part enabled by Cetra genes.
