I'm assuming you're referring to Cloud sitting on the ceiling after he gives Sephiroth the Black Materia, right? (at least, in my dim memory, he's sitting on the ceiling - haven't played FFVII for a looooong time).
Isn't that also the scene, or very near it, where Cloud goes a bit whacko and starts begging Hojo for a number?
It wouldn't surprise me at all if Cloud had the ability to fly/whatever, but only ever used it/was able to use it in extreme circumstances. Jenova had a habit of flying around, after all, lol. In her final form she does a lot of floating, if I recall. And every Jenova-infected boss in the game also had some form where they flew or floated: Sephiroth, obv, and even Hojo had a boss form where he could float, I think.
And then you begin to wonder if it's Jenova's direct manipulation that allows them to utilise that ability. For example, could Sephiroth himself actually fly before Nibelheim? (Of course, it's not something you'd normally try out, lol, but would he have been able to at all before Jenova had a more direct hand in things?)
